UB Rowing Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release UB Rowing Takes Second At ECAC Metro Championships The University at Buffalo rowing squad captured a second-place overall finish at the annual ECAC Metro Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA Saturday. The Bulls scored 58 points on the day to finish ahead of 11 crews, but fell short of UMass, who amounted 70 points, to take the championship. The successful day catapulted UB to its first medalling performance at the conference championships in school history.
The eight boat, consisting of coxswain Sheralyn Briggs (St. Catharines, Ont./West Park), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, NY/St Paul), Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul), Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross), Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ont./Dennis Morris), Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul), and Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), continued their torrid streak of success by placing third in a time of 7:13.932. The crew became the first UB Varsity Eight boat to medal in the event after being picked to finish fifth in the ECAC/METRO Coaches Poll. With the third-place finish, the Bulls scored 30 points and pushed UB into second place in the final point results.
Coxswain Adriane Wotawa-Bergen (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Amy Eggleston (Ripley, NY/ Ripley), Kristen Lane (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech), and Amanda Mackeigan (Brockville, Ont./Brockville C.I.), who represented the top four rowers of the UB Novice Eight boat, had the best times in both Heat Two (7:34.946) and the Grand Final (8:00.227). The foursome, who were picked to place fourth, won the race 11 seconds ahead of runnerup Marist.
After scoring the second-best time of 6:59.067 in the Heat One race, the UB Second Varsity Eight crew of coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Chandra Hazey (Riverview), Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Alexis Grates (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), Maren Greene (Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor Community), Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), and Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ont./Lakeshore Catholic) faltered in their attempt to place first as expected according to the ECAC/METRO Coaches Poll. The Bulls placed fifth in the Grand Final with a time of 7:23.394.
Coming into the day’s race ranked 12th in the nation according to the USRowing Collegiate Poll, the Lightweight Eight boat finished in the middle of the pack by crossing the finish line in third out of six crews. The Lightweight Eight boat featured coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), Emily Clark (North Collins, NY/Lake Shore), Stevie Feig (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach), Beth Gaworecki (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), Diane Minardo (Webster, NY/Webster), Jennifer DeLone (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), Lauryn Brown (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), and Jessica Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst). Up Next
