Bulls Take Two Medals at New York States

Novice eight crew squad earns silver, varsity eight takes bronze

BUFFALO, NY - UB entered three boats in the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships at Whitney Lake. All three teams, the varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight, reached the finals in their respective competitions. The novice eight squad posted the best mark of the three with a second-place finish while the varsity eight was third in its race and the varsity four took fourth.

UB's novice eight boat earned a silver medal with its second-place finish in the finals. The squad turned in a 7:24.5 clocking to finish behind champion Ithaca at 7:20.4. The Bulls won their preliminary heat in 7:37.6 to reach the finals. UB's entry consisted of coxswain Randi Prusak (Attica, NY/Attica), stroke seat Lavoya Reddish (Queens, NY/Hillcrest), seventh seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), sixth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), fifth seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), fourth seat Amy Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield), third seat Melissa Ward (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), second seat Jessica Roman (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) and bow seat Sara Sullivan (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East).

The Bulls' varsity eight took a bronze medal with its third-place finals finish. The Bulls turned in a 6:55.2 showing and just missed taking first place by less than two seconds. Ithaca won the race in 6:53.5, two-tenths of a second ahead of second-place William Smith (6:53.7). UB's entry consisted of coxswain Katie Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels), stroke seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), seventh seat Victoria Kolomiets (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), sixth seat Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford (MI)), fifth seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), fourth seat Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden), third seat Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), second seat Sarah Vieira (Pompton Lakes, NJ/DePaul Diocesan) and bow seat Melissa Warhol (Orchard Park, NY/Nardin Academy).

UB's varsity four of coxswain Tina LaFountain (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills), stroke seat Courtney Kane (Latham, NY/Shaker), third seat Margaret Siller (Buffalo, NY/Hutch-Tech), second seat Karey Smollar (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and bow seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) reached the finals, placing fourth of the six competitors in the race. The squad turned in a time of 8:17.0, just missing a bronze medal by 1.9 seconds.

The Bulls race at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia this weekend. The Dad Vails, one of the most famous collegiate rowing competitions, will serve as the Eastern Rowing Championships and consist of some of the top teams from throughout the country.
