The Harvey Cup

BUFFALO, NY The University at Buffalo and Eastern Michigan University split the four races at Sunday's Harvey Cup with each squad taking two events. UB won the novice eight and second varsity eight races while EMU took the varsity four and the Harvey Cup race, the first varsity eight event. Conditions on Tonawanda Creek at Amherst's Veterans Canal Park included a steady downpour during the final two races.

UB won the opening race of the session, the novice eight in easy fashion. The Bulls' A boat crossed the finish line in 7:00.8 while Eastern Michigan was second in 7:20.1 and another UB entry finished third in 7:35.0. The UB A entry included consisted of Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) in the stroke seat, Crysten Rushmore (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) in the seventh seat, Andrea Lysiuk (St. Catharines, Ontario/Holy Cross SS) in the sixth seat, Marissa Ammendola (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) in the fifth seat, Elizabeth McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Nardin Academy) in the fourth seat, Katherine Laub (Batavia, NY/Batavia) in the third seat, Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy) in the second seat, Ginelle Michael (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in the bow seat and coxswain Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg). The B entry included Katy Noviello (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) in the stroke seat, Samantha Atlas (Rockville Center, NY/South Side) in the seventh seat, Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) in the sixth seat, Caitlyn Lewis (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett Square) in the fifth seat, Jacquie Zehler (Alden, NY/Attica) in the fourth seat, Rachel Albert (St. Louis, MO/Parkway Central) in the third seat, Lindsey Yonko (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) in the second seat, Anna Cross (Selkirk, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) in the bow seat and coxswain Jessica Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst).

The teams then raced for the Harvey Cup in the first varsity eight competition. UB opened the race with a slight advantage, leading halfway through the 2,000-meter distance. However, Eastern Michigan was able to catch and pass the Bulls in the final 1,000-meters and win in 6:28.1 to UB's 6:35.0, about a boat-length.

"The varsity led for the first 1,000-meters but got outraced in the end," said UB head coach Rudy Wieler.

The Bulls' entry included Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) in the bow seat, Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) in the seventh seat, Sandra Kisil (Hamilton, Ontario/Westdale SS) in the sixth seat, Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) in the fifth seat, Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) in the fourth seat, Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) in the third seat, Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer) in the second seat, Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden) in the bow seat and coxswain Katie Johnson (Kenmore, NY/Holy Angels Academy).

Prior to the start of the second half of racing, a light rain turned into a heavier downpour. EMU then took the varsity four race by five seconds over the Bulls (7:57.2-8:02.1). UB's boat included stroke seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), third seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) , second seat Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), bow seat Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker) and coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst).

The Bulls squared the results with a victory in the final event of the morning, the second varsity eight as UB edged the Eagles by one second. UB finished in 7:00.2 while EMU clocked in at 7:01.9.

The UB entry consisted of Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview) in the stroke seat, Jessica Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood) in the seventh seat, Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford (MI)) in the sixth seat, Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie) in the fifth seat, Amy Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield) in the fourth seat, Kristin Bender (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) in the third seat, Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) in the second seat, Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in the bow seat and coxswain Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy).

Two important championship events remain on the UB schedule. The Bulls head for the New York State Championships in Whitney Point next weekend. The Metro Championships will be May 9 in Worcester, MA.
