UB Women's Crew Wins SUNY ChampionshipBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo's women's crew team rowed its way to a first-place finish at the 2001 SUNY Rowing Championships, held Saturday in Owego, NY. UB defeated Binghamton, 31-30, to take the women's title and combined with the UB men's club crew team to take first overall and win the first annual Chancellor's Cup. All four of the UB boats won their morning heats and qualified for the afternoon finals competition where water conditions were choppy and a slight head wind was present. In the finals, UB's Novice 4 boat won its race in a time of 6:41, beating second-place Binghamton (7:13). Comprising the Novice 4 squad were Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), Mary Conniff (Camden, NY), Tracy Torelli (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), Tracy Clarke (Mt. Siani, NY/Rockford (MI)) and Katie Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) (coxswain). This is the first SUNY Championship that a UB boat has won. In the Novice 8 race, UB finished with a time of 7:29 in second place behind Binghamton (7:19). In the women's Varsity 8 race, UB finished in second and third behind Binghamton and in the Varsity 4 race, UB finished in third and fourth behind first-place Geneseo and Maritime. UB's next competition is May 5-6, at the New York State Championships. |
