LIVERPOOL, NY – The University at Buffalo rowing squad captured its second Harvey Cup title Friday afternoon when it defeated Eastern Michigan in a double meet held at Syracuse University that included both UConn and Colgate. Both UB and EMU's Varsity Eight squads competed for the annual Harvey Cup title, while Colgate claimed top prize by winning six of seven races competed in.

In the morning session, the eight-boat of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park), stroke-seat Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), seven-seat Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), six-seat Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), five-seat Amanda Garbacz (St. Catharines, Ontario/Dennis Morris), four-seat Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), three-seat Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), two-seat Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), and bow-seat Brittany Aiello (Lancaster, NY/Clarence) blasted past the Eagles to win by more than 13 seconds, taking its second consecutive Harvey Cup title. With a win over UConn, Colgate advanced to take on the Bulls in the evening race. Despite a strong time of 7:24.6, the Bulls were upended, as the Raiders were able to cross the finish first by just two seconds.

UB's Second Varsity Eight boat took both the morning and evening races, downing Eastern Michigan with a time of 7:14.4, then taking down Colgate with a time of 7:41.2. The Bulls won by 22 seconds and 14 seconds, respectively, against the two opponents. The boat was raced by coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), stroke-seat Morgan Witte (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), seven-seat Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart), six-seat Ashley Wodzinski, five-seat Bridget Yannes (Edgewater, NJ/Holy Cross), four-seat Tara Rudkoski (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), three-seat Mary Karl (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown), two-seat Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), and bow-seat Amanda MacKeigan (Brockville, Ontario/Brockville).

Buffalo also posted wins against EMU in the Novice Four and the Second Varsity Eight, both advancing to take on Colgate in the evening races. The four-boat of coxswain Svetlana Khaimchayev (New York, NY/Francis Lewis), stroke-seat Alanna Wellspeak (Albany, NY/Albany), three-seat Jordan Talbott (Dumfries, VA/Forest Park), two-seat Jessica Lau (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn), and bow-seat Kirsten Olstad (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) were triumphant over the Eagles, but fell to Colgate by a four-second margin.

The Lightweight Eight took top honors in the Second Varsity Eight evening race against EMU and UConn with a time of 7:56.7, then split the boat in half and competed in Novice Four. The four-boat claimed a victory over UConn and EMU with a time of 9:08.9.

With the Harvey Cup safely back in the Bull's possession for another year, the squad looks ahead to the Metro Championships on May 5 in Worcester, MA. Compared to a major conference championship, the team met great success last season by placing second in a field of 13 schools from the Northeast Coast.
