Crew Teams Reach Finals at Knecht Cup
Varsity Eight A Team Wins Petite Final
 | | Victoria Kolomiets | UB's crew squad traveled to Camden, NJ for the
annual Knecht Cup hosted by Villanova University. All four of
UB's entries reached their finals competitions with the varsity eight
A team winning the Petite Final in 7:04.1 along the
2000-meter course. The squad of Victoria Kolomiets (Guilderland,
NY/Guilderland), Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford
(MI)), Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden), Kali Spoto
(Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), Deanna Knighton (Angola,
NY/Lake Shore), Kathleen Dorn (Newark, NY/Newark), Tara
Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), Kasey
Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye
Falls-Lima) and coxswain Tina LaFountain (Scotia, NY/Burnt
Hills) finished two seconds ahead of Rhode Island and three in front of North Carolina in
the race. The varsity eight B team of Margaret Siller (Buffalo,
NY/Hutch-Tech), Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin
Academy), Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga),
Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), Amy
Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield), Maggie Cote (Grosse Ile,
MI/Grosse Ile), Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), Jessica
Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood) and coxswain
Katie Johnson (Kenmore, NY/Holy
Angels) took second in its Petite Final race in
7:23.9, four seconds behind the winning boat from the University
of Kansas.
UB's novice crews also reached the finals of their races
with the novice four squad of Kaitlen Bender (Hamburg,
NY/Frontier), Jen Livingston (Eden, NY/Eden), Michelle Heller
(Fresh Meadows, NY/Benjamin Cardozo), Georgia Maloney
(Cortland, NY/Homer Central) and coxswain
Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst,
NY/Amherst) competing in the Petite Final.
The squad took sixth of six entrants in 8:56.9. The novice eight team of
Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker),
Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer), Natalie Pugliese (Niagara
Falls, Ontario/St. Paul's), Marla Hardin (Riverview, MI/Riverview), Chandra Hazey (Riverview,
MI/Riverview) and coxswain Dawn Kavanaugh (Grand Island, NY/Nardin
Academy) competed in the Grand Final. The
team finished second of the six boats in 7:13.9, four seconds behind the winning squad from Wisconsin.
Grand Finals are considered the championship race while Petite Finals are considered the consolation
race in rowing competitions.
The teams travel to Hamilton, NY this weekend for the Seneca Cup, where they will race against
Colgate and Hobart/William Smith.
