Six Boats Reach Grand Finals At Knecht Cup

Bulls post four first place finishes during the first day

CAMDEN, NJ – The University at Buffalo rowing team had a fantastic first day at the Knecht Cup on Saturday, putting six of its boats in the grand final of their respective races and placing another boat in the petite final. UB’s Varsity Eight Boat coasted to two first place finishes on the day, while the Novice Four boat also had two first place races.

The Varsity Eight boat which consisted of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catherines, Ontario, West Park), Tara Rudkoski (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross), Alana Sharpe (St. Catherines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe), Brittany Aiello (Lancaster, NY/Clarence), Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul) and Kelsey Tretter (Rochester, NY/Brighton) posted two first place finishes on the day clocking in at 6:47.2 in the first race, nearly eight seconds better than the next boat. In the semifinal round, UB nearly matched its opening round result as they finished the race in 6:47.3. The result was just under four seconds better than the next team in their heat. With the two first place finishes, UB is now in the grand final and will race UMass, Bucknell, Rhode Island, UConn and Wisconsin.

UB’s Novice Four boat also had two first place finishes on the afternoon as coxswain Joseliana Villaman (Franklin Square, NY/Valley Stream North) and rowers Shenita McLean (Buffalo, NY/Leonardo DaVinci), Sara Podbielski (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek), Anne Denton (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Ewelina Kotowska (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) posted a time of 8:27.1 in their first race, which was 13 seconds better than any other boat in the race. In the semifinals the Bulls clocked in at 8:27.6, which was nearly eight seconds better to advance to the grand final against Brandeis, Lafayette, Tulsa, Marietta and Boston College.

UB’s Lightweight Four team was also able to reach the finals as they finished second in their heat at 8:12.7, just a little over a second behind Penn State. The Bulls will join the Nittany Lions in the final as well as UMass, Pittsburgh, Tulsa and Lafayette.

UB’s Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four also reached the finals of their respective races with top performances on the day. The Varsity Four boat finished second in the semifinals at 7:58.4 to reach the finals, while the Second Varsity Four finished third in their race to reach the finals.

The Second Varsity Eight boat posted good results as well as it finished in second in its first race at 7:06.3, which was less than a second off of Wisconsin’s time. In the semifinal race, the Second Varsity Eight boat finished second at 7:08.3, which was three seconds off the lead. UB advances to Sunday’s final with Tulsa, UMass, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and North Carolina.

UB’s Lightweight Eight boat also competed on Saturday and it will race in the petite final on Sunday morning against Penn State, Temple, Duquesne, Virginia Tech and Lehigh.

The second day of racing at the Knecht Cup will begin early as the first races are set for 7:00 am.
