Varsity Eight Finishes Third At San Diego Crew Classic

Bulls race against some of the top crews in the country

SAN DIEGO, CA -The University at Buffalo rowing team put forth a great performance at the San Diego Crew Classic, finishing in third place in the finals for the Sam Adams/Mesa Distributing Cup.

The Varsity Eight boat which consisted of Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park), Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Tara Rudkowski (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross), Alana Sharpe (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe), Brittany Aiello (Lancaster, NY/Clarence), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic) started in the six spot in the race and had a great second leg which moved them into second in the race. The Bulls ended up finishing in third at 6:51.28, which was just a little over a second behind the second place team, San Diego. UC-Davis won the race at 6:47.33, which was less than four seconds better than UB's time.

The Bulls had the distinction of being the only crew from the East in Sunday's final. The race started with 21 crews and the Bulls finished third behind two boats from California. UB also finished ahead of Sacramento State, the boat that finished ahead of the Bulls in Saturday's heat. San Diego State and Kansas State also finished behind UB in the race.

The Bulls are back in action this upcoming weekend as the full crew heads to the Knecht Cup in Camden, New Jersey.
