BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo rowing team sent its boats to two different locations this weekend as the Varsity Eight boat saw much success at the highly-competitive San Diego Crew Classic. The rest of the UB squad raced Bucknell University on the Susquehanna River.

The Varsity Eight boat advanced to the finals of the San Diego Crew Classic as it had a second place finish in its heat. The boat comprised of coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park), Melina DiCosimo (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Tara Rudkowski (Merrick, NY/Calhoun), Bridget Yannes (Edgewater Park, NJ/Holy Cross), Alana Sharpe (St. Catharines, Ontario/Governor Simcoe), Brittany Aiello (Lancaster, NY/Clarence), Lauren Sexton (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul), Cathleen Streicher (West Seneca, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic) and clocked in at 6:44.07, which was just over a second behind Sacramento State. Both the Bulls and Hornets move into the finals where they will be racing for the Sam Adams/Mesa Distributing Cup. In their heat, the Bulls finished ahead of Loyola, Santa Clara, UC-Irvine, Texas and Colorado.

Back at Bucknell, the Bulls fought hard in each of the five races, but came up short in all five to the Bison. UB’s Novice Four boat of coxswain Sarah McCann (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and rowers Gina Giammichele (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton), Sarah Walker (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit), Karli Hess (Lackawanna, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) and Victoria Walsh (Pittsford, MA/Pittsford) finished at 10:00.46, which was just a little more than five seconds behind Bucknell’s time of 9:55.22.

The Varsity Eight boat will return to action in tomorrow’s final where it will be joined by Sacramento State, San Diego State, Kansas State, UC-Davis and San Diego. The final is scheduled to begin at 10:40 am pacific time. The full squad is back in action next weekend at the Knecht Cup in Camden, New Jersey.
