UB Crews Take Three of Four Races on Sunday

Second Varsity 8, Lightweight 8 and Novice 8 post wins in Boston

BOSTON, MA – The University at Buffalo women’s crew team completed a weekend of rowing on Boston’s Charles River with three victories and a second-place on Sunday. UB raced against Rhode Island, MIT and Radcliffe following Saturday’s head-to-head races against Northeastern, Boston College and Dartmouth. Good water and a crosswind greeted the racers on Sunday.

UB’s Second Varsity 8 team came away with a win in a head-to-head race against Rhode Island. UB’s boat finished in 7:46.32 to Rhode Island’s 7:53.18. The UB entry included coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst), stroke seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview), seventh seat Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), sixth seat Alexis Grates (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), fifth seat Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), fourth seat Jessica Hughes (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), third seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), second seat Lindsey Yonko (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) and bow seat Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).

In the Novice 8 race, UB finished first in a three-team race with Rhode Island and MIT. UB won in 7:49.10, easily in front of Rhode Island’s 8:04.97 and MIT’s 8:21.48. The UB shell included coxswain Margaret Devendorf (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), stroke seat Maggie Fairgrieve (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lake Shore Catholic), seventh seat Paige Baritot (Orchard Park, NY/Buffalo Seminary), sixth seat Mia Pavletic (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills Central), fifth seat Nicole Cyr (Groton, NY/Dryden), fourth seat Jill Harclerode (Portland, OR/Westview), third seat Jackie Stone (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham), second seat Darcie Bryant (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker) and bow seat Crystal Byrnes (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs).

UB’s Lightweight 8 squad raced a pair of Novice entries from Radcliffe (Harvard’s women’s team), taking first place in 8:06.53. The Radcliffe A squad was next at 8:16.09 and the B squad was third in 9:32.13. The UB team included coxswain Abbie Potts (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg), stroke seat Katie Barnum (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), seventh seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), sixth seat Beth Gaworecki (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), fifth seat Caitlin Hambridge (Amherst, NY/Holy Angels Academy), fourth seat Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), third seat Devin Broadwell (Gorham, NY/Marcus Whitman), second seat Jacquie Zehler (Alden, NY/Attica) and bow seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy).

The Bulls posted a second-place finish in the Varsity 8 race, finishing 12 seconds behind Rhode Island. UB turned in a 7:24.58 clocking to the Rams’ 7:11.84. MIT was third among the three boats in 7:32.01. The UB entry included coxswain Sher Briggs (St. Catharines, Ontario/West Park SS), stroke seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls), seventh seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), sixth seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), fifth seat Corinne Blum (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), fourth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), third seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), second seat Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer) and bow seat Natalie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul’s).

UB hosts Bucknell and Colgate in its next action on Saturday, April 9 at Veterans Canal Park in Amherst on the Tonawanda Creek.
