Crew Season Opens at Ithaca

Varsity A and B squads roll to victory

ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo opened the 2003 spring portion of the crew season with some strong racing at a tri-meet against Marist and host Ithaca on the Cayuga Inlet. Conditions varied for most of the day, consisting of rain for much of the racing, as well as winds that changed at times from a strong tailwind to an equally strong headwind.

UB's varsity eight squad rolled to a first-place finish as the Bulls completed the 2,000-meter sprint course in 7:20.4. Ithaca was second at 7:25.7 and Marist took third in 7:28.9. UB's second varsity eight team also won its race in 7:15.1 to beat out Ithaca (7:16.1). It was the first time in four years that the Bulls posted two first-place varsity finishes.

The first varsity boat consisted of bow seat Mary Conniff (Camden, NY/Camden), second seat Tracy Clarke (Mt. Sinai, NY/Rockford (MI)), third seat Victoria Kolomiets (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), fourth seat Kali Spoto (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), fifth seat Deanna Knighton (Angola, NY/Lake Shore), sixth seat Kathleen Dorn (Newark, NY/Newark), seventh seat Tara Celestini (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill), stroke seat Kasey Hansen (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and coxswain Tina LaFountain (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills).

UB's number two boat included bow seat Margaret Siller (Buffalo, NY/Hutch-Tech), second seat Caitlin Logue (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), third seat Amy Aldridge (Penfield, NY/Penfield), fourth seat Jessica Barrell (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), fifth seat Michelle Schwach (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), sixth seat Lauren Dunn (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East), seventh seat Sara Sheffer (Ft. Edward, NY/Colonie), stroke seat Jessica Ecke (Ridge, NY/Longwood) and coxswain Katie Johnson (Kenmore, NY/Holy Angels).

The Bulls also sent a pair of novice eight crews into the water, finishing second in both races to Ithaca in both races. The A squad turned in a 7:24.0 showing to Ithaca's 7:14.0 while the B team finished in 7:50.5 to place behind the Ithaca number three varsity team at 7:46.8.

UB's novice eight A team included bow seat Stephanie Spinella (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), second seat Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston), third seat Bonnie McVicker (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker), fourth seat Joanne Olsen (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), fifth seat Kat Vossler (Jamestown, NY/Falconer), sixth seat Natlaie Pugliese (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul's), seventh seat Marla Hardin (Riverview, MI/Riverview), stroke seat Chandra Hazey (Riverview, MI/Riverview) and coxswain Dawn Kavanaugh (Grand Island, NY/Nardin Academy). In the B boat were bow seat Rachel Simson (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), second seat Jennifer Livingston (Eden, NY/Eden), third seat Michelle Heller (Fresh Meadows, NY/Benjamin Cardozo), fourth seat Emilee Norris (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), fifth seat Kristin Bender (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), sixth seat Georgia Maloney (Cortland, NY/Homer Central), seventh seat Maggie Cote (Grosse Ile, MI/Grosse Ile), stroke seat Katie Jones (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and coxswain Kaitlin Buchheit (Amherst, NY/Amherst).

The teams are back in action next Saturday at RIT. The quad-meet will also include Binghamton and Rochester.
