UB Rowing Prepared To Plunge Headstrong Into Season

Success over spring break prepares team for upcoming San Diego Crew Classic

Photo of
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo rowing squad returned home from spring break in Oakridge, Tennessee having experienced booming success at both the heavyweight and lightweight level. Both squads tangled with some of the best rowing schools in the Northeast and came away with promising results heading into this weekend’s first official meet of the season: The San Diego Crew Classic.

The Varsity crew earned a stretch of victories, downing four of the five squads faced in the week-long endeavor. Over the week, head coach Rudy Wieler experimented with many squads and found success over Tulsa, New Hampshire, West Virginia, and George Washington. The varsity’s only blemish came against Syracuse on March 16, as they were downed in both the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight by tight margins. The Varsity Orange were able to preserve a seven-second win over the Bulls.

The Lightweight crews also experienced formidable opposition in the likes of Dayton, Tulsa and West Virginia, pulling away with three quality victories. On Wednesday, the Bulls put two boats on the water against Dayton’s lightweights, which finished sixth last season in the U.S. Rowing Coaches Poll. UB’s top lightweight boat finished ahead of the Dayton’s top boat, scrimmaging in a 2 x 1500 meter affair. The next day, the lightweights faced Tulsa, and took top honors in the lightweight four.

Because each of the races were scheduled scrimmages, the top honors do not count on the official season record. However, in the teams’ preseason, the heavyweights ended the week with a 4-1 record, while the lightweights finished at a perfect 3-0.

The rowing team’s official opener is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, as the Varsity Eight will travel out west for the San Diego Crew Classic. In the field of sixteen teams, the Bulls drew a second seed behind top-seeded St. Joseph’s. The preliminary race time for the scheduled Women’s Cal Cup is set for 11 a.m. EST on Saturday, which will determine the two finalists who will race on Sunday, April 1 at 2 p.m. EST.
