Rowers Post Strong Times at C.R.A.S.H.-B. Indoor Championships

Although the weather in the Northeast is not conducive to outdoor rowing just yet, several Bulls took to their oars and posted strong indoor times at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. World Indoor Rowing Championships held at Boston's Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center.

Using ergonomic rowing machines instead of the skulls that hit the water this spring, over 2,000 athletes from all over the world competed in the event officially named the Charles River All-Star Has-Beens Indoor Championships.

In the varsity lightweight competition Karey Smollar (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) placed 38th of 85 entrants in the 2000-meter event, turning in a time of 7:41.70.

Three rowers competed in the open division which consisted of 275 entrants. Sara Vieria (Pompton Lakes, NJ/DePaul Diocesan) was UB's top finisher in 7:48.70 for 202nd place. Team captain Katy Frank (Rotterdam, NY/Mohonasen) placed 223rd in 7:56.20 and Sarah Giardenelli (Esperance, NY/Duanesburg) clocked in at 8:00.90 for 233rd place. All three recorded their fastest times for the year.

The Bulls open their spring outdoor season at the Bucknell Invitational on March 24.

Barnes Completes USRowing Program

Bulls' head coach Meg Barnes completed the Intermediate Level - Level III portion of USRowing's Coaching Education Program during the organization's three day national convention in Tacoma, WA.

USRowing's Coaching Education curriculum is based upon the National Standards for Athletic Coaches. These standards are a result of a consensus facilitated by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) in collaboration with the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), Program for Athletic Coaches Education (PACE) and the Youth Sport Institute at Michigan State University. The curriculum outlines the competencies that rowing coaches should know and be able to perform.

USRowing's Coaching Education Program is a five-level program. Level III is specifically designed for head coaches of junior, collegiate, or master's programs, or for experienced head coaches.
