Three Bulls Named To MAC Academic Honor Roll

Kevin Brown, Rob Golemba and Anthony Puccia earn honor

BUFFALO, NY - Three members of the University at Buffalo baseball team were named to the 2001 Mid-American Conference Academic Honor Roll, as announced by the league office.

Seniors Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown), and Anthony Puccia (Penfield, NY/Penfield) all received recognition from the MAC for their academic and athletic performance. Student-athletes must obtain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher and earn a letter for the current season to be eligible for the honor. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible as student-athletes must have attended that institution for an entire year.

Brown, a Social Sciences/Health and Human Services major began the season as the team's second baseman before moving to the outfield. The co-captain hit .219 (35-for-160) over 47 games while driving in 21 runs in addition to his 21 runs scored. The senior was the recipient of The Coach's Award at the end-of-year awards banquet, which is given to a student-athlete who stands out in dedication, commitment, unselfishness and enthusiasm towards helping the team improve.

Golemba hit .278 (47-for-169) in 48 games. The History major, who was tied for second on the team with four homers, earned the team's Most Improved Player Award. Golemba was expected to play a utility role in 2001, but won the starting centerfield position during the team's spring trip to Florida. The senior batted from the leadoff position for much of the second half of the season, drawing 27 walks while scoring 22 runs.

Puccia was 1-1 on the mound for the Bulls in four appearances. The Management and Information Systems major allowed just three runs and four hits while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings of work to earn the win against Mt. St. Mary's on March 8. However, Puccia's season was cut short with a rotator cuff injury that required surgery.

The Bulls finished the 2001 campaign with an 11-39 overall record and a 5-23 record in the program's first season of competition in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
