Jim Koerner Hired To Complete Baseball Staff
Koerner served as the recruiting coordinator for the Thundering Herd, as well as worked with outfielders and the Marshall hitters. The Thundering Herd just completed their first season in one of the toughest baseball conferences in the nation, Conference USA. “We are very lucky to have Jim join our staff,” said Torgalski. “His knowledge of the game and his tireless work ethic on the recruiting trail are tremendous assets to this program and to be able to bring him back to Western New York, having already added Joe Hesketh, will help Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference.” “By assembling a staff of WNY natives, we are hoping to establish a strong presence in the local baseball community and return Buffalo to a level of success that we know UB is capable of achieving,” Torgalski added. Prior to Marshall, Koerner spent the 2004 season as an assistant coach at Monmouth University in New Jersey where he helped the Hawks make their seventh straight Northeast Conference tournament appearance. Koerner worked directly with the first basemen at Monmouth, helping get a freshman first baseman on the New Jersey All-Freshman team. Before Monmouth, Koerner worked in Buffalo, spending three season as the head coach at Medaille College. During his three seasons he recruited and developed two All-America Northeast Region players, as well as the 2003 Conference Player of the Year and Conference Pitcher of the Year. He also was named the North East Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. The 2003 team broke nearly every offensive and pitching record in the history of the school as well as having one of the top turnarounds in Division III. The past three summers, Koerner coached the USA International team in the Belguim Open, Aruba Goodwill Series and the Chianti Baseball Classic (Italy). His teams have collected victories over the French and Belgian Olympic teams. In the summer of 2002, Koerner served as the assistant coach for the Geneva Lakers in the New York Collegiate League. During the course of his career, he has recruited and coached seven players that have either been drafted or signed professional baseball contracts. Koerner played for four years at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, before signing with the Richmond Roosters of the Independent Frontier League in 1998. Koerner earned his Bachelor’s degree in economics from St. John Fisher and received a Master’s degree in athletic administration from Marshall. |
