Bulls Swept in Season Finale Doubleheader by Ohio

Skonieczki finishes as all-time single-season record holder for most runs scored (50); Ciesla finishes as all-time single-season record holder for most at bats (226) and most hits (84)

ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo baseball team finished their 2009 season on the road as they were swept by Ohio in a conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon. In the opener, the Bulls held a commanding lead heading into the bottom of the ninth until the Bobcats erupted for five runs to capture a 12-11 victory. In the nightcap, the Bulls fell to the Bobcats, 19-8.

In the opener, the Bulls stormed out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Kevin McCall perfectly placed a ball into right center for a three-RBI double, putting the Bulls in the lead 4-0. Next up, Brad Cochrane smacked a two-RBI shot over the left field wall for his third home run of the season.

The Bobcats managed to score two runs in the bottom of the first to chisel away at the Bulls’ lead. In the top of the second, the Bulls recaptured their six-run lead with a pair of RBI-base hits by Charlie Karstedt and Rob Lawler.

The Bulls continued to expand their lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs including an RBI single to right field by Cochrane for a Bulls’ 10-2 lead. On the Bulls' next score of the inning, Adam Skonieczki set the all-time single-season record for most runs scored off a fielder's choice by Eric Flynn with Cochrane out at second.

In the top of the seventh, Cochrane smacked his second RBI-base hit of the game to left field to put the Bulls in the lead 11-4.

The game was decided in the next two and a half innings as the Bobcats scored eight unanswered runs including five runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 12-11 victory.

Cochrane went 4-for-4 including four RBIs and a run scored. Lawler went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

In 1.0 inning of work, Zach Anderson (4-7) recorded the Bulls’ loss.

Trailing 3-0 in the nightcap, the Bulls went on the board in the top of the third off an RBI-base hit by Chris Ciesla.

In the next three and a half innings, the Bobcats scored eight unanswered runs to extend their lead to 11-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Flynn took the Bobcats deep with a solo shot to center.

The Bobcats extended their lead to 17-2 with six-runs in the bottom of the seventh including a grand slam by Robert Maddox III.

The Bulls erupted for six runs of their own in the top of the eighth. With runners at the corners, Flynn cracked a two-RBI double to right center to cut back the Bobcats’ lead. Brian Randazzo and Brad Agustin recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to continue the Bulls’ offensive attack. Cochrane dropped an RBI-base hit in left field for his third of the day.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bobcats added a pair of runs to give them a commanding 19-8 lead and eventual victory.

Flynn went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Randazzo and Cochrane joined Flynn by going 2-for-5 at the plate.

In 5.1 innings of work, Pierre Miville-Deschenes (4-6) struck out five batters while recording the Bulls’ loss. This marked Miville-Deschenes’ 13th appearance, placing him tied for first for most appearances in a single-season.

The Bulls (20-35, 6-20 MAC) had a record breaking year marked by both individual and team achievements. The Bulls' 20 wins gave the team the most wins since the program's reinstatement in 2000. The Bulls also broke the all-time single-season team records for most hits (591), most doubles (132), most runs (424), most RBIs (384), most total bases (874), most strikeouts (358), most walks (253), most at bats (1933), most putouts (1371) and most assists (549).
