Bulls Split Doubleheader With Bonnies

UB scores a season high 17 runs in the first game

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning of a doubleheader opener with St. Bonaventure as UB defeated the Bonnies, 17-7, in game one of the twin bill. St. Bonaventure picked up a victory by the score of 16-5 in game two, Tuesday afternoon at Amherst Audubon Field. With the split, UB improves its record to 16-32 on the year.

Down by three going into the bottom half of the first, The Bulls scored eight runs in the first inning on just three hits as Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) scored two with a triple. Sophomore Brad Agustin (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) also plated a run as he singled through the left side. Batting for the second time in the inning, freshman Adam Skonieczki (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drove in three runs with a bases clearing triple.

The Bulls scored in every inning of the opener, scoring single runs in the second, fourth and fifth, two runs in the third and four runs in the sixth. In the second inning, Nick Walczak (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) scored on a wild pitch, while in the third inning UB scored its runs on RBI singles from Ciesla and Agustin. Ciesla added another RBI in the fourth inning as he finished with five in the game. Freshman Bobby Pizzuto (Mentor, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) provided the run in the fifth inning as he hit a run-scoring single through the right side.

In the sixth inning, Ciesla singled to right field which drove in sophomore Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls). Junior Tony Fuller (Rochester, NY/Penfield) added a run as he doubled up the middle and then junior Rick Oliveri (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) provided the final two runs as he doubled to right field.

Freshman Jeffery Hains (Mexico, NY/Mexico) picked up the win in the game as Zach Anderson (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and Steve Geltz (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) saw action out of the pen.

In the second game, UB held a 2-1 lead after the first inning as James Piazza (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) scored two runs with a single, but the Bonnies scored six unanswered runs before UB snuck one in the bottom of the third on a single from Fuller. St. Bonaventure added nine more runs before UB struck for two in the bottom of the sixth and Ciesla reached on a fielder’s choice and Agustin drove one in with a single to left field.

Redshirt freshman James Flatley (Elma, NY/Iroquois) picked up the loss for the Bulls as he went three innings before four other pitchers saw action, including Piazza and freshman catcher William Sonnie (Chesterland, OH/West Geauga).

The Bulls wrap up their regular season with a three-game series at Kent State beginning on Thursday. Games for Thursday and Friday are set for 3:00 pm, while Saturday’s game against the Golden Flashes is a 1:00 pm start.
