The University at Buffalo baseball team finished the road half of their 2008 season with a four-game trip that sent the Bulls to Bowling Green and Ohio State. At Bowling Green, the Bulls dropped Friday’s opener, 5-3, and fell in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, losing game one, 6-2, and falling in the nightcap, 9-8. From Bowling Green, the Bulls traveled to Columbus to take on Ohio State. Buffalo fell to the host Buckeyes, 14-13. Bulls Pound Out Season-High 18 Hits at Ohio State The Buffalo bats came alive at Ohio State as the Bulls collected a season-best 18 hits against the Buckeyes. Brian Randazzo (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles), Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Jacob Rosenbeck (Medina, NY/Medina) each had three hits against the Buckeyes. UB also had a season-best five doubles in the contest.
A crowd of 3,503 was on hand at Bill Davis Stadium for Tuesday’s game between Buffalo and Ohio State. 2,600 sixth graders were in attendance for Ohio State’s annual Columbus City Schools day. The crowd was the largest to see the Bulls play since the program’s reinstatement in 2000. The previous high was set on March 11, 2006 when 3,123 saw UB play at Southern Miss. The contest was also the first for the Bulls against a Big Ten opponent since the reinstatement of the program. Stangroom Among MAC’s Best Hurlers Buffalo hurler Mike Stangroom (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) continues to rank among the best pitchers in the Mid-American Conference. Stangroom heads into the final weekend of conference play with the second-best ERA in the conference, 2.97. He is also holding opponents to just a .233 batting average, fourth-best among MAC pitchers.
Senior catcher Rick Oliveri (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) has been providing an offensive spark for the Bulls throughout conference play. Oliveri enters the final weekend of conference action with a .356 batting average in MAC games. He also leads UB with a .533 slugging percentage and has collected a team-best 13 RBIs in conference games. On Deck Buffalo will conclude their 2008 season with a three-game conference set at home against the Bobcats of Ohio University. Game one between the Bulls and Bobcats will be Thursday, May 15, first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. The two teams will meet again on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and will finish the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Prior to Saturday’s contest, Buffalo will be honoring their seniors who will be playing their final game at Amherst Audubon Field. |
