Buffalo Drops a Pair to Northern Illinois
DeKALB, IL Buffalo (16-33, 5-17) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Northern Illinois (29-21, 12-10) at Ralph McKinzie Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulls dropped game one, 15-2, and fell in the nightcap, 6-4. In game one, Northern Illinois used a nine-run second inning to take command of the contest. UB got off to a promising start by scoring twice in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by James Kingsley (Medina, NY/Medina) and Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport). However, Huskie pitching would silence the Bulls' bats the rest of the way. Buffalo was held to six hits in the game, led by Daniels and Andrew Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor) with two apiece. UB starter John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) struggled on the hill and was charged with the loss after allowing nine earned runs in 1 2/3 innings. In game two, all four of the Bulls' runs came via home runs. After spotting the Huskies a 2-0 lead, Wengert led off the third inning with his first career home run to cut the lead to 2-1. Jordan Alcott (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) launched his first career long ball in the fourth inning to tie the contest, 2-2. It was Kevin Nesteruk's (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) time to shine in the sixth inning as he hit his third home run in the past five games to put Buffalo on top, 4-2. However, the lead was short-lived as Northern Illinois scored once in the sixth, twice in seventh and once in the eighth to defeat the Bulls. The Bulls will close out the 2003 campaign with a weekend series at Kent State beginning on Friday. |
