UB Rally Falls ShortBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo baseball team completed their season with a 4-3 loss to Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls trailed 4-0 going into the last inning and rallied for three runs, but fell one run shy of forcing extra innings. The story early in the game was the sensational pitching from Stony Brook starter Chris Flinn, who went 8.0 innings and gave up no runs on three hits and struck out 11 batters on the day. Flinn picked up the win to go 8-3 on the year. The Seahawks got on board in the second inning on an RBI single from Phil Bouchard for the 1-0 lead. Stony Brook would add two more runs in the sixth as Craig Ansman hit a two-run double to centerfield and lead 3-0. The insurance run the Seahawks would need came in the eighth inning as Ansman again hit a double to centerfield, this time scoring one run and giving Stony Brook a 4-0 lead. In the ninth, the Bulls made a final charge before falling just short of the come from behind win. Mike Flaherty (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) led off the inning by reaching on a wild pitch after a strikeout. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) then hit a ground rule double that bounced over the centerfield wall. With two runners on, Scott Mruczek (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) roped a two-run double to left, scoring Flaherty and Sanchez. After a ground out moved Mruczek to third, Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) hit a sacrifice fly to score Mruczek and make it a 4-3 game. Stony Brook reliever Kevin Willi then got a ground out to end the game and pick up the save. The Bulls got an outstanding performance on the mound from Jeff Robertson (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) who went the distance for his first complete game of the year. Robinson went the full 9.0 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and struck out three. Robinson got some clutch defensive play behind him as the Bulls' infielders turned six double plays, four of which were inning ending double plays. Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was UB's top hitter, going 2-for-3 on the day. In the three game series with Stony Brook, Daniels went 8-for-10 with six runs scored and improved his season batting average to .305. UB finishes their season with a 12-25 record.
