Six-Run First Leads Buffalo To Victory Over Miami, 12-8
The Bulls sent 10 men to the plate in the bottom half of the first inning as they scored six runs in the frame. Junior Mike Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) led off the game with a double before the next three guys all walked, driving in the first run, and chasing Miami starter Robert Shannon out of the game. With the bases loaded, sophomore Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) drilled a two-run double to right center. Juniors Nick Walczak (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) and Rick Oliveri (Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) each recorded productive outs, both driving in runs. UB scored its final run of the inning as freshman Adam Skonieczki (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drove in a run with an infield single. Miami got itself on the board in the top of the second on a two-out infield single from Josh Hula.
UB struck again for three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as all nine men came to bat. Flynn drew a bases loaded walk for the first run of the inning and Walczak drove in two more runs with a two-out single. In the top half of the fifth, Miami also batted around the order, scoring four runs in the inning, cutting UB’s lead to 9-5. The Bulls responded in the bottom of the sixth inning with another three runs, highlighted by a two-run triple from Folli. The RedHawks added three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the Bulls were able to escape further damage and walk away with the victory. On Senior Day, senior Adam Ruszkowski (Utica, NY/Proctor) got the start and picked up his second win of the season. Ruszkowski went five innings before paving the way for sophomore Steve Geltz (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) who went 3.1 innings and struck out six batters. He pitched into the ninth inning before sophomore Dan Francis (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) came on for the final two outs of the game.
Folli went 4-for-6 in the game with a single, two doubles and a triple. Freshman Bobby Pizzuto (Mentor, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) improved his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth inning. The Bulls will be back in action next weekend as they begin a three-game series at Bowling Green. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 3:00 pm. Games on Saturday and Sunday will each begin at 1:00 pm.
