Big Inning Rockets Toledo Past Buffalo, 17-6
TOLEDO, OH - Toledo used a 12-run sixth-inning that featured seven hits and a two home runs to open up a 15-0 lead and walk to a 17-6 win against the University at Buffalo baseball team in Mid-American Conference action at Scott Park on Friday. Freshman Mike Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) extended his hitting streak to 21 games when he notched an RBI double in the eighth inning for the first Buffalo run. He finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs to raise his average to .352. Toledo (13-29 overall, 3-11 MAC) opened up a 3-0 lead in the first two innings off Buffalo (14-25-1 overall, 1-10-1 MAC) starter Chris McGraw (Summerville, SC/Summerville) (1-4), which is how the game stayed until the sixth, when Drew Hoisington hit a grand slam off reliever Anthony Marchioli (Buffalo, NY/West Seneca West). Dan Stong later hit a three-run shot over the right-center wall. After Toledo scored again in the seventh to take a 16-0 lead, Buffalo got on the board on an RBI double from freshman designated hitter E.J. Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). It added another run in the frame on his twin brother Mike's double that added to his hitting streak. Toledo added its final run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 17-2 lead, but Buffalo scored four runs in the ninth to make it 17-6. After an error allowed senior shortstop Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon-St.Jude) to reach, junior first baseman James Kingsley (Medina, NY/Medina) stroked his 11th homer of the year over the left-center wall. Kingsley now has a career-high 43 RBIs on the year. Two more runs scored on RBI singles from senior right fielder Andrew Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor), who is riding an eight-game hitting streak and Mike Folli. Nick Szczur (5-5) pitched eight innings, allowing two hits, two walks and two unearned runs to shut down the Bulls. He struck out six. Dustin Sommer pitched the final inning, allowing four hits and four runs. Hoisington went 2-for-3 with three runs and five RBIs to pace the Rocket offense and Stong matched him with a 2-for-2, three-run, four-RBI day. Pat Rohrbaugh also had two hits and two runs and Brian Sanders and Jake Swint had two hits for the Rockets. Buffalo will try to rebound from the loss on Saturday when it faces Toledo in the second game of
the three-game set at 1:00 pm. |
