Bulls Drop Series Finale to Huskies

UB falls to Northern Illinois, 10-0

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo and Northern Illinois University completed their four-game weekend series at Audubon Park Sunday afternoon with the Bulls dropping a 10-0 decision.

Northern Illinois lefthander Brad Gavelek struck out 12 Bulls and allowed three hits and one walk for the complete game and giving the Huskies (27-24, 9-14 MAC) a four-game sweep of the Bulls (11-38, 5-23 MAC).

NIU scored two runs in the first inning off starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) as Noel Danielson and John Brock drew walks to lead off the game. Danielson scored the first run on an RBI groundout by Pat Kerrigan while Brock came home with the second run on a single by Rob Marconi. Brock also scored in the third inning to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

UB threatened in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) singled and Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) doubled down the left field line to give the Bulls two runners in scoring position. However, that was as close as the Bulls got to cracking the scoreboard all afternoon as Gavelek was able to coax a flyout by Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) to end the inning.

The Huskies broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Dan Urban knocked in a pair with a bases-loaded single and Kerrigan plated a third run with a double. The inning ended as Urban was gunned down at the plate trying to score after Kerrigan's double as Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) applied the tag after a strong relay throw from second baseman Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport).

NIU added four in the eighth off reliever Mike Leslie (Suffern, NY/Suffern). Marconi singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on Jason Ciarrachi's triple to center. Ciarrachi scored on the play when Nesteruk's throw to third rolled into the UB dugout giving Ciarrachi the free base and an 8-0 lead. Danielson and pinch hitter Bob Dobbertin added RBIs later in the inning

Besides the Nesteruk and Sova hits in the third, UB's only other safety of the game was a single by Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst) in the eighth inning. Balentine struck out six in his seven innings of work.

The Bulls completed their first season in the Mid-American Conference with a 5-23 league mark. UB concludes the season Wednesday against Niagara at Audubon Park at 6:00 pm.
