Stony Brook Sweeps Bulls

UB Drops Two Games to Seahawks

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo was swept in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dunn Tire Park, falling 9-3 and 9-5 to visiting Stony Brook University.

In the opener, the Bulls got on the board first with a single run in the first inning. Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) led off with a base hit and later scored on an RBI single by Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy). Stony Brook answered with two runs in the third inning to take the lead and came back with five runs in the fourth to extend the lead. C.J. Lutz had a two-run single to spark the Seahawks fourth inning rally. UB would add another run in the fifth as Daniels roped a triple to centerfield and then scored on a base hit by Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central). Stony Brook added two more runs in the seventh and UB plated a single run in the bottom of the seventh as Daniels scored his third run of the game to make it a 9-3 final.

Stony Brook got on the board first in the second game, as the Seahawks exploded for seven runs in the second inning of UB starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeye Falls-Lima). Stony Brook started the inning with five-straight base hits and Ed Murillo had a two-run double to give the Seahawks the early lead. Stony Brook would score two more in the fifth inning, including a solo home run from Phil Bouchard.

Then things got a little crazy for UB in the bottom of the fifth. With one out and a runner on first, Adrian Daniels hit a deep fly ball to left center that appeared to hit over the wall and bounce back onto the field. The field umpire ruled the hit a home run and two UB runs crossed the plate. Stoney Brook head coach Matt Senk argued the call the umpire discussed the call with him and even walked out to the left field wall and had a discussion with the Seahawks' left fielder. After a long delay, the field umpire reversed his decision and ruled it was not a home run. He instead ruled that Daniels' hit was a double and the UB runner on first had to go back to third. After the 20-minute delay with arguments from both teams, the game resumed and Kevin Brown hit a line drive double off the wall scoring both UB runners.

UB added a single run in the sixth inning and made a comeback effort in the seventh. The Bulls used two walks and a base hit to load the bases with no outs and after an infield pop up, Bryan Sanchez drew a walk to plate one run. A sacrifice fly by Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) scored another run for the Bulls for the 9-5 final score.

Adrian Daniels was the hottest hitter on the day, going 6-for-7 with five runs scored in the doubleheader, including a double and a triple. Kevin Brown went 5-for-8 with three RBIs on the day as well.

These same two teams will meet again on Sunday at 1pm, for a single nine-inning game at Dunn Tire Park.
