Bulls Split Twinbill with St. Bonaventure Bulls break record for most wins in a season (20) since program’s reinstatement in 2000 BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team continues to make history as they broke the record for most wins since the team’s reinstatement to Division-I status in 2000. The Bulls captured their 20th victory of the season as they cruised to a 10-4 victory over St. Bonaventure in game one of a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Amherst Audubon Field. In the nightcap, the Bulls fell to the Bonnies, 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel.
Facing two outs, the Bulls found themselves trailing in the bottom of the third, 4-3. Following a double by Chris Ciesla, Brian Randazzo tied the game at 4-4 as he cracked an RBI single to left field, driving in Ciesla for the tying run. With the bases loaded, Flynn broke the game open by crushing a three-RBI double to the right-center wall, putting the Bulls in the lead, 7-4. Skonieczki closed out the Bulls’ five-run third inning by driving in Flynn with an RBI single to right to give the Bulls an 8-4 lead.
Flynn provided the Bulls with a solid offensive effort, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a season-high four RBIs. Ciesla and Skonieczki each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs each. In 4.0 innings of relief work, River McWilliams (3-3) allowed no runs off two hits while collecting the Bulls’ victory. The nightcap featured a pitcher’s duel between the two teams as the Bulls and Bonnies were held to a combined 16 hits.
In the remaining innings, the Bonnies managed to score two unanswered runs to pick up the nightcap victory. Randazzo went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Ciesla (1-5) struck out three batters while recording the Bulls’ loss in 2.2 innings of relief work. By splitting the day’s doubleheader, the Bulls have won the season series over the Bonnies, 3-2. Earlier in the season, the Bulls and Bonnies split a doubleheader at Fred Handler Park followed by the Bulls’ 14-5 victory over the reigning Big Four Classic champion Bonnies in the opening round of this year’s Big Four Classic. Game one of the Bulls-Bonnies doubleheader will be televised on TWCS-Buffalo Channel 13 in the Western New York area. The game will be aired on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:00 pm and Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8 at 8:00 pm. The Bulls (20-28, 6-14 MAC) will play their final home games in a conference weekend series versus Bowling Green on May 8-10. Game one is set for Friday, May 8 with the first pitch to be thrown at 3:00 pm.
