Miami Sweeps Doubleheader From Buffalo

Sean McWilliams goes the distance despite the loss

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo baseball team took part in two very different games in its doubleheader against Miami, Friday evening at McKie Field. The first game was a true pitcher's duel, a 2-1 Miami victory. The nightcap however was a 12-3 RedHawk victory, including a seven run third inning.

In the opening game all three runs were scored within the first two innings of the contest and then the pitchers took control and didn't allow a single runner to cross the plate. The RedHawks took an early lead on a two-out single, but relinquished the advantage in the top of the second.

Dan Quinn (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) reached base on a fielding error and scored on a double to right center field by freshman Jacob Rosenbeck (Medina, NY/Medina). The Bulls were unable to add to their lead as they had a runner in scoring position with just one out. Miami retook the lead in the bottom of the inning piecing a run together that finally crossed the plate on a Ryne Robinson groundout.

Buffalo starter Sean McWilliams (Canandaigua, NY/Canadaigua) went the distance for Buffalo, allowing just four hits after the second inning. McWilliams went the distance, scattering seven hits, allowing two runs, while striking out five and walking three.

The Bulls had their chances to tie the game and even take the lead as Miami committed four errors in the ball game. In the UB half of the eighth inning, the Bulls had runners on first and second with just one out, but senior James Kingsley (Medina, NY/Medina) hit into an inning-ending double play.

Keith Weiser picked up the win for Miami, going 7.1 innings, giving up six hits and one run, while striking out five. Matt Long entered the game in the eighth inning, picking up the four-out save.

The nightcap was all Miami as it put together a seven-run third inning to take a commanding lead that it would not give up.

The RedHawks scored one in the first inning on a single, but Buffalo was still very much in the game at that point. However in the third inning, Geoff Orr hit a two-run double and then scored himself on a single. Miami then loaded the bases, which were emptied on a Chris Niro triple. Niro would then score on a groundout.

UB got on the board in its half of the fourth inning as Quinn doubled down the left field line, scoring Carl Aquila (Alden, NY/St. Mary's/Erie CC) who singled up the right side earlier in the inning.

Miami then scored four more unanswered in the fifth and sixth innings before Buffalo added two in the seventh. Kingsley led of the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a single by Mike Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). Kingsley would come in to score on a sacrifice fly by David Amaro (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). Folli advanced to third on a single by Rick Oliveri (Tonowanda, NY/Canisius) and then was driven in on a single by his brother, E.J. Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott).

The Bulls committed four errors in the contest after recording none in the first game of the doubleheader. Adam Ruszkowski (Utica, NY/Proctor) started the game for the Bulls, but only lasted 2.1 innings, charged with eight earned runs on eight hits. Matt Johnson (Montague, MI/Montague/Grand Rapids CC) came on for two innings of relief, allowing four hits and three runs, however none of those were earned. Dan Francis (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) worked the final 3.2 innings of the game, giving up just one hit and one unearned run. Both Johnson and Francis struck out three Miami batters.

Graham Taylor picked up the win for the RedHawks, going seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, while striking out 11.

The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow as they meet in a single game at 5:30 pm at McKie Field.
