Bulls Down Griffs, 5-1BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo (11-34) defeated Canisius College (10-23), 5-1, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Dunn Tire Park. UB freshman pitchers Mike Leslie (Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Nick Bellacose (Clarence, NY/Clarence) combined to scatter 11 hits and strand 10 Canisius runners in the contest. Leslie, making just his second start this season, went seven strong innings, allowing just an unearned run in the sixth inning to even his record to 1-1. Leslie also fanned a career-best five in the contest. Bellacose pitched the final two innings surrendering three hits. The Bulls jumped in front in the second inning as Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) and Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) drew walks to open the inning. After a wild pitch by Canisius starter Jeremy Dracup (2-4) moved both runners into scoring position, Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst) brought Sanchez home on an RBI groundout to second. Huber then scored on Scott Gruver's (Vestal, NY/Vestal) single to left for the 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 until the sixth when the Griffins plated an unearned run. With one out, Paul Fede walked and moved to second on a wild pitch by Leslie. Ishmael Cox then singled up the middle, moving Fede to third. When centerfielder Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) bobbled the ball, Fede broke for home and scored the lone Canisius run. UB padded their lead in the seventh off reliever Jon Lilley. Golemba led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena). Both runners then scored when Brandon DiCesare drilled a double down the left field line to make the score 4-1. DiCesare later scored when Huber singled to right. Bellacose then relieved Leslie to shut the door on the Griffs who threatened in the ninth with runners on first and second and just one out. However, Bellacose was able to coax Kyle Domogala to pop foul to DiCesare and Eric Posa to hit into a fielder's choice to end the contest. Golemba, DiCesare, Gruver and Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) all had two hits for the Bulls in their 11 hit attack. Cox was 3-of-4 for the Griffs and added four stolen bases while Domogala and Posa each added two hits. UB returns to Mid-American Conference play on Friday when they open a four-game
weekend series against Northern Illinois. The games will be played at UB's Audubon Park at the Amherst
Pepsi Center. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6:00 pm. |
