UB Bats Come Alive In Victory Against Akron, 12-3
The teams waited an hour and 35 minutes to get started as there was rain in the Buffalo area. After getting out of the top of the first inning by turning a double play with the bases load, UB scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman Bobby Pizzuto (Mentor, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) continued his hot hitting by ripping a triple to right field, driving in junior Mike Folli (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). Sophomore Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) then drove in Pizzuto with a single. The Bulls added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, using a two-out rally to plate two runs. Adam Skonieczki (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) walked and after stealing second was driven in on a single from Folli. Folli then came into score as Pizzuto reached on an error. After Akron got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth, the Bulls batted around the order in the bottom of the inning and scored three runs as Brad Agustin (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) hit an RBI double, while freshman Shivam Bhan (Calden, Ontario/Mayfield) drove in a run with a single. Folli also added a RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Akron picked a run up in the top of the sixth on a home run, but the Bulls answered with three more in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pizzuto drove in Skonieczki on a ground out and Folli crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Flynn scored the third run as he was driven in on a double from Agustin. The Zips would add another single run on a home run in the top of eighth. The Bulls picked up their final run in the bottom of the eighth as Bhan scored on an Akron error as the Zips were trying to turn a double play. Junior Mark Tourangeau (Oakville, Ontario/Queen Elizabeth Park) got the win as he pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs on four hits. Tourangeau also struck out eight Akron batters. Dan Francis (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) pitched the final two innings, allowing just one run on one hit.
Agustin finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate, while driving in two runs. Folli went 2-for-4 in the game, but scored three times. Also creating offense for himself was Skonieczki, who went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Skonieczki stole three bases on the afternoon, as UB stole five bases total. The Bulls will look for the series sweep tomorrow as they face Akron in the final game of the three-game set. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm. |
