Buffalo Earns Extra-Inning Win Over Ohio

Bulls hold on for 4-3 win in 10 innings

ATHENS, OH - The University at Buffalo baseball team scored two runs in the top of the 10th and held on to a one-run lead after the bottom half of the inning en route to a 4-3 win at Ohio this afternoon. The win is the Bulls' second Mid-American Conference victory of the season.

The Bulls (9-24, 2-7 MAC) opened the scoring in the top of the first when Al Barbato (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) scored on a groundout by Andrew Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor). Barbato led off the game by reaching base on an error and moved to third on a double by Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon/St. Jude).

The Bobcats left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first but then tied the score in the second when Willie Walker hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout by Bryant Witt and then scored on a groundout by Dusty Hammond.

Buffalo then left bases loaded in the fourth inning before taking a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a two-out single by James Kingsley (Medina, NY/Medina) that scored Wengert. Ohio, however, answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning. A double to left by Brian Colopy scored Hammond to tie the score once again.

The game remained tied after the ninth before the Bulls broke out with two runs in the top of the 10th. David Amaro (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) singled with one out and then advanced to third on a double by Phil Vanhorne (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Teresa). A single by Bryan Thrasher (Utica, NY/Proctor) scored Amaro, and a sacrifice fly by Brian Zelasko (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) scored Vanhorne to give Buffalo a 4-2 lead.

Ohio scored one run in the bottom of the 10th on a two-out sacrifice fly by Walker, but Buffalo pitcher Mark Tourangeau (Oakville, Ontario/Queen Elizabeth Park) got Witt to fly out to center field to end the game.

Tourangeau pitched the final four innings of the game for the Bulls to earn the win, his second of the season. He allowed just three hits and one run and struck out two. Ohio's Derek Witt suffered the loss, giving up four hits and two runs and striking out four in the final 3.1 innings of the game.

The Bulls and Bobcats will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm at Bob Wren Stadium.
