Bulls Batter Golden Griffins, 13-5

UB uses three multiple-run innings to down crosstown rivals

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo used three multiple-run innings, scoring three in the first and five each in the fourth and seventh frames to handily defeat crosstown rival Canisius, 13-5, in a non-conference baseball game at UB's Amherst Pepsi Center Field. The victory snaps a four-game losing streak by the Bulls and improves their record to 10-17 while the Golden Griffins fall to 2-24.

The Bulls jumped on Canisius starter Ryan Topping in the first inning as Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) brought home Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon/St. Jude) with a single. Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) later stroked a double to the right field fence scoring DiCesare and Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) to give the Bulls a lead they would not give up at 3-0.

UB continued the scoring in the fourth as Milhalics picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded single plating John Boom (London, Ontario/Catholic Central). DiCesare added a pair of RBIs with a double down the left field line to score Andy Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor) and Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena). Huber then added his second RBI of the afternoon with a single past first base to score DiCesare to give the Bulls an 8-0 cushion and end Topping's day on the hill.

Canisius broke into the scoring column in the fifth against reliever Mark McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Timon/St. Jude) with an RBI double by John Cicero to score Jerry Burke. The run was the first allowed by McMahon in his last 10.2 innings of work over three appearances. The Griffins would add a pair of unearned runs against McMahon in the sixth. Steve Coppola scored from second as Wengert's throw to second to force out Matt VanGeene sailed high. VanGeene then scored on Scott Beebe's RBI single to move the score to 8-3.

VanGeene narrowed the margin to 8-5 with a two-run bases-loaded single to center off reliever Kyle Swiatocha (Forest Hills, NY/Holy Cross) plating Cicero and Danny Conrad.

UB then used a five-run seventh to finish the scoring. With two outs, Boom reached on Burke's fielding error at short. Then the floodgates opened on reliever Chris Cole. Sova laid down a perfect bunt against a drawn-back infield and Wengert walked to load the bases. Milhalics and Phil Vanhorne (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Teresa) then picked up RBIs as Cole walked both to move the score to 10-5. Sophomore catcher Fran Coudriet (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who came in defensively for DiCesare in the seventh, then picked up the first RBIs of his career, drilling a double over the right fielder's head to score three runs and give UB then 13-5 advantage.

The Bulls used four pitchers in the game as they fanned 11 Griffins. McMahon (1-1) picked up his first collegiate victory with four innings of relief, striking out five. The junior was 0-13 prior to Wednesday afternoon. DiCesare was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs to give him a team-best 24 and boost his batting average to .366. Mihalics scored three runs for the Bulls. Cicero, Coppola and VanGeene had two hits apiece for the Golden Griffins.

UB returns to Mid-American Conference action this weekend when they travel to Ohio University for a four-game series starting on Friday.
