Bulls Swept By Bonnies in DoubleheaderBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo dropped a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon to St. Bonaventure, 5-0 and 7-2, in non-league baseball action at a windy Dunn Tire Park. The Bulls (9-31) were shutout in game one by St. Bonaventure pitchers Matt Sullivan and John Brewer. Sullivan pitched five innings, allowed four hits and struck out seven while Brewer went the final two innings, allowing one hit, to give the Bonnies the game one shutout. The Bulls were unable to get a runner past second base in the seven-inning contest. St. Bonaventure (16-15) got all the runs they would need in the second inning as Mike Tegeler walked, stole second and later came home on Mike Sedor's RBI single. The Bonnies added three runs in the third as Jonathan Myler scored on a passed ball to make the score 2-0. Eric Wilson then scored from third when UB first baseman Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) threw wild to home in an attempt to get Wilson who broke for the plate when Tegeler appeared to be picked off first. Tegeler advanced to third on the play and later scored the Bonnies' fourth run when Dan Dennison tripled to right. The Bonnies tacked on their fifth run in the sixth as Dennison doubled and scored on Jim Wolf's double. UB leadoff batter Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) accounted for three of the Bulls' five hits. Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Blair also notched singles for UB. In game two, shortstop Mark Evers had two homers and an RBI triple while Mike Rapicioli added a home run and two RBIs in the 7-2 decision. Brewer started game two allowing just one hit in two innings before yielding to Matt Gunesch, who went the final five innings. The Bulls notched single runs in the fifth and sixth innings after the Bonnies had built a 7-0 lead. In the fifth, Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) led off with a single and moved to third on Kevin Brown's (Amherst, NY/Amherst) double. Gruver plated UB's first run on an RBI groundout by Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East). In the sixth, Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) singled to open the inning and later scored from third when Gruver's grounder was mishandled by Tegeler at first base. UB returns to the Mid-American Conference wars with a four-game series at Akron starting
on Friday. The Bonnies remain in Buffalo and will face Canisius in a doubleheader tomorrow. |
