The University at Buffalo baseball team took the first two games last weekend against Miami University, winning Friday, 9-8 in 10 innings, and Saturday, 3-0. The Bulls were unable to complete the sweep of the RedHawks, falling in Sunday’s series finale, 10-8. Ciesla Walk-Off Home Run Completes Comeback Friday’s Buffalo victory came in both improbable and dramatic fashion as the Bulls erased a seven run deficit in two innings and then won the game on an extra innings, walk-off home run. UB trailed 8-1 going into the bottom of the eighth but rallied to score three in the eighth and four in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) completed the comeback with a lead off home run to center field to give the Bulls a 9-8 victory. The walk-off home run was the first for the Bulls since since April 7, 2004 when UB defeated Niagara, 8-7, on a walk-off home run by Al Barbato.
In game two of the weekend series on Saturday, right-hander Mike Stangroom (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) threw 7.1 shutout innings, leading the Bulls to a 3-0 victory. The junior allowed just three hits, two of which came on bunt singles. Stangroom struck out four RedHawks in the contest and at one point between the second and fifth innings retired ten consecutive batters. Stangroom has allowed just two earned runs in his last 17.1 innings pitched. On the season, Stangroom has a 2.79 earned run average, the fourth-best mark in the MAC. Skonieczki Swings Hot Bat Against RedHawks Adam Skonieczki (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) provided clutch hits all weekend for the Bulls against Miami. On Friday, the sophomore outfielder provided RBIs in both the eighth and ninth innings during UB’s comeback win against the RedHawks. Skonieczki then doubled home the first run of Saturday’s 3-0 victory and continued his clutch hitting with two two-out RBI singles on Sunday as the Bulls attempted to again rally past Miami. In total, Skonieczki hit .462 on the weekend with two doubles, six RBIs and a .615 slugging percentage.
The Bulls begin a busy six-game week with a doubleheader Tuesday against St. Bonaventure at Amherst Audubon Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. On Wednesday, UB makes the short trip up north to take on Niagara in a single game. Buffalo then returns to Mid-American Conference play this weekend, April 25-27, when they host Akron. Game time between the Bulls and Zips is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. |
