Quinn's Homer Pushes Bulls Past Bobcats, 4-3
Freshman Brad Agustin (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) got things started for the Bulls in the eighth inning as he extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single past the third baseman. After a flyout for the second out of the inning, James Kingsley (Medina, NY/Medina), now a senior, mashed a bullet down the third baseline for a double, sending Quinn up to be the hero with his team-leading seventh homer of the year. The eighth inning had a familiar feel for the Bulls (10-24 overall, 3-10 MAC), who mounted a five-run rally against the Bobcats (12-19 overall, 5-8 MAC) on April 22, 2005, capped by a grand slam from Kingsley. The game eventually ended in an 8-8 tie after 12 1/2 innings as rain soaked the field. Rain the next two days cancelled the series, making Friday's game the first against the two clubs in two years with an outcome. Ohio got on the board in the top of the first, as a single by Willie Walker got past an outfielder allowing Anthony Gressick to score after his two-out double. Buffalo answered in the bottom of the second as Kingsley and Quinn each drew walks to start the inning. Two fielder’s choice groundballs helped Kingsley tie the score. The Bobcats took a two-run lead in the fifth as Haydon Johnston singled to lead off. After a flyout, a single by Dusty Hammond moved him to third before singles from Gressick and Walker drove them in. Buffalo senior Sean McWilliams (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) (3-4) gave 5 1/3 innings of gutsy effort, allowing 12 hits and two earned runs before yielding to freshman Zach Anderson (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) (1-0) who earned his first career win by giving up one hit and a walk in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Ohio ace Derek Witt (4-3), who was on the hill for last year's rally, too, drew the loss for the Bobcats, allowing six hits and four earned runs in the complete game effor. He struck out six, but was hurt by allowing five walks. Kingsley and Quinn each had two hits for the Bulls, as Kingsley went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Quinn went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. The Bobcats pounded 15 hits, as two-through-four hitters Dusty Hammond, Anthony Gressick and Willie Walker each had three hits.
Buffalo and Ohio will continue the series with a 1:00 pm game on Saturday at Amherst Audubon Field. |
