Bulls Drop Finale to RedHawks

UB baseball team suffers 14-3 loss at Miami to finish four-game series

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo concluded its Mid-American Conference series at Miami (Ohio) with a 14-3 loss to the RedHawks at McKie Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped the Bulls' record to 9-17 overall and 2-10 in the MAC while Miami moved to 20-16, 7-5.

The Bulls committed five defensive errors in the loss as Miami plated four unearned runs. UB also hurt itself on the basepaths, stranding 15 runners in the contest.

UB collected 13 hits in the contest, none for extra bases. Phil Vanhorne (Scarborough, Ontario/Mother Teresa), Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and Andy Wengert (Utica, NY/Proctor) each had three hits for the Bulls. DiCesare also accounted for two RBIs while Vanhorne drove in one. DiCesare plated Vanhorne with a single in the fourth inning while Vanhorne and DiCesare knocked in single runs in UB's two-run uprising in the top of the fourth.

The RedHawks broke open the game in the fourth, after UB had narrowed the margin to 5-3, with nine runs in the inning.

UB got strong pitching late in the game from relievers Anthony Puccia (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Brian Cloninger (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) after Miami had built up its big lead. Puccia went two innings, allowing one hit and no runs while Cloninger held the RedHawks hitless in the final two innings, striking out two. UB starter Mark Garrard (Port Hope, Ontario/Port Hope) was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-2.

Miami junior starter Chris Leonard (2-2), rated by ESPN's Peter Gammons as one of the top collegiate pitchers after his 6-0 mark in last summer's Cape Cod League, picked up the win, allowing 10 UB hits and striking out six. Leonard, a first-team All-MAC selection last season, is considered by many, including Gammons, of being a first-round major league draft pick.

UB returns home to host Canisius on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
