Bulls, Bobcats Split DoubleheaderBATAVIA, NY - The University at Buffalo and Ohio University split Saturday's Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. The Bulls downed the Bobcats 7-3 in Saturday's opener while the Bobcats took the nightcap 26-3. In the opener, UB's John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) threw a complete game to register his third win of the season, leading the mound staff. Sullivan struck out six and did not allow a walk in the seven-inning gem. UB opened the scoring with three runs in the first before an out was recorded. Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) led off with a walk and moved to second when Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) was hit by a Chuck Lombardy pitch. Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) brought home the game's first run, plating Golemba with an RBI single to left. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) followed with a two-run double to left center giving UB a lead it would not relinquish. Ohio scored two runs in the third on RBIs by Tony Gandee and Ryan Kyes to close to 3-2 but that was as close as they would get. UB added insurance runs in the third on a Sanchez sacrifice fly and Eric Huber's (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) three-run homer to right in the sixth. Huber and Sanchez each finished the game with three RBIs. Ohio scored in all but the seventh inning of the nine-inning nightcap, plating five runs in the second, sixth and ninth innings in their 26-run, 23-hit barrage. Adam Fox's RBI groundout plated Kyes with the only run of the first inning as the Bobcats built a 15-0 lead in the first five innings. UB scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning. Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst) brought home Huber with a bases-loaded single. Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) scored when Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) hit into a double play and Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) scored when Ohio's Walt Novosel uncorked a wild pitch. Kyes was 4-of-5, including two doubles and a triple, with five runs scored and six RBIs in the nightcap. Fox went 4-of-6 with two RBIs and Tony Gandee was 3-of-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Kyes became Ohio's all-time hits leader Saturday with his 237th career hit and the school's single season doubles leader with his 22nd. Kyes also leads the nation with his 22 doubles. Novosel struck out 10 in eight innings of work. The Bulls are now 8-29 overall and 3-16 in MAC play. Ohio stands at 19-17 and 6-8 in
the league. The squads complete their series with a 1:00 pm contest at Dwyer Stadium on Sunday. |
