UB Drops Opener of MAC Weekend Series

Bobcats hammer Bulls, 23-3

BATAVIA, NY - The University at Buffalo dropped a 23-3 decision to visiting Ohio University Friday afternoon in a Mid-American Conference contest at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. The Bulls are now 7-28 overall and 2-15 in the MAC while the Bobcats are 18-16 overall and 5-7 in league play.

Andrew See was the day's hitting star with a 4-of-5 day with six RBIs for the Bobcats. See had a run-scoring double in the first to open the scoring, a two-run double in the second and added a three-run triple in the sixth.

After the Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Bulls answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) led off with an infield single and advanced to third as Brandon DiCesare's (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) routine grounder was thrown away by Ohio third baseman Adam Fox. With runners on second and third, Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) tied the contest with a single to right, but Ohio starter Denny McGee was able to get out of the inning.

The Bobcats took the lead for good, 3-2, in the second with a solo homer by Jeremy Johnson. The roundtripper was Johnson's 10th of the season, tying him for the team lead. Ohio added six runs in the third off UB starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) which included two runs scoring on bases-loaded walks.

Ohio increased its lead to 17-2 in the sixth with an eight-run outburst. Cory Keylor had a two-run single while See cleared the bases with his three-run triple.

Buffalo added a run in the seventh as Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) doubled and came around to score on a double by Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy).

McGee went the distance for Ohio for his sixth complete game of the season and struck out eight to raise his record to 7-2. Balentine took the loss to fall to 1-4.

The teams play a doubleheader at Dwyer Stadium tomorrow with a seven-inning contest followed by a nine-inning game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
