UB Drops DoubleheaderBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo was swept in a doubleheader at Dunn Tire Park Wednesday afternoon by crosstown rival Canisius. The Golden Griffins swept the Bulls, winning the first game 3-0 and taking the second game 8-5. Canisius got an outstanding pitching performance from Mark West, who pitched the complete game shutout, in the opener. West silenced the UB bats, going the full 7.0 innings and allowing just four hits and struck out nine. Canisius scored their first run in the first inning on an RBI single from Ishmael Cox. In the fifth, the Golden Griffins added some insurance runs as Bill Doll tripled to knock in one run and then scored on a sacrifice bunt. Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) was the only Bulls' player with more than one hit, going 2-for-3 in the game. In the second game, Canisius jumped out early again with a run in the second inning. UB responded with two in the bottom of the second. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) drew a lead off walk and Scott Mruczek (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) followed with a two-run home run off the left field foul pole to give UB the lead. The Golden Griffins bounced right back and scored two in the third, one off an RBI single by Kyle Domogala, to regain the lead at 3-2. The Bulls had an answer again, scoring two in the bottom of the third to reclaim the lead. Kevin Brown knocked in one run with an RBI single in that inning as UB lead 4-3 after three. Each team added a single run in the fourth inning. Paul Fede had an RBI double for Canisius and Rick Mariano (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) scored on a wild pitch as UB led 5-4. Canisius would tie the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Capaldo to make it a 5-5 game. Mike Mannella led off in the top of the sixth for Canisius and hit a solo home run to left center of UB starter Jeff Robertson (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) to give the Golden Griffins the lead for good. Canisius would add another run in the inning and an insurance run in the seventh to seal the 8-5 victory. Kevin Brown led UB with three hits on the day, going 3-for-6 in the two games. The Bulls dropped to 9-24 on the season and will square off against Binghamton
