Bulls Snap Losing Skid

UB drops Niagara, 11-7, in non-conference action

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY - The University at Buffalo snapped its 10-game losing skid with an 11-7 win at Niagara on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulls rapped a season-high 19 hits in the effort and improved to 7-27 on the season.

Niagara jumped out early as Chris Zent hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Purple Eagles a 3-0 lead.

The Bulls answered with single runs in the second and third on an Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) RBI double and Bryan Sanchez's (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) ninth home run of the year.

Josh McCurdy turned in a rarity for Niagara in the third with an inside-the-park home run as his hit to center got past a diving Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) and rolled to the fence. McCurdy slid under the tag at home, giving Niagara a 4-2 edge.

The Bulls took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring three runs. Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) doubled to left plating two runs to tie the contest, 4-4. DiCesare would score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Niagara's Aaron Mierzwa. DiCesare was the Bulls' hitting star of the afternoon with a 5-of-6 day at the plate, knocking in three and scoring twice.

UB increased its lead to 10-4 with five runs in the sixth, highlighted by Golemba's first career triple, driving in a pair of runs.

Niagara (15-12) closed to 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth on a Darin Wahl RBI double and Pete Nastasi's two-run homer.

The Bulls added an insurance run in the seventh as DiCesare scored on Eric Huber's (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) double. Huber was 4-of-5 at the plate, knocking in two runs. DiCesare and Huber each had a pair of doubles.

That was all the support that Brendan Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) would need. Dunford came on for the Bulls in the fourth inning, relieving starter Nick Bellacose (Clarence, NY/Clarence). Dunford went the final six innings, striking out five to pick up his first win of the season.

UB returns to the Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend hosting Ohio University in a four-game series at Batavia's Dwyer Stadium. Friday's game is a 3:00 pm start. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single contest on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm both days.
