Bulls Split In Dunn Tire Park DebutBUFFALO, NY - After two previous rainouts, the UB Bulls finally made their debut appearance at Dunn Tire Park, splitting a doubleheader with Duquesne. The Dukes won the opener 7-2, but the Bulls came back to take the nightcap 6-5. In the first game, Duquesne jumped out early with two runs in the first and four in the third inning. UB scored their first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East). The big blow for the Dukes was a three-run homer by Nick Danzuso in the four-run third. UB added another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Scott Mruczek (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena). Duquesne would add a single run in the seventh for the 7-2 final. The Dukes again jumped out to a quick lead in the second game, scoring four runs of starter Tom Januchowski (Depew, NY/Lancaster) with two runs in each of the first two innings. The Bulls would charge back, beginning with a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Mike Flaherty (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) singled and stole second. He then scored on a base hit by Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit). Bryan Sanchez Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) then launched a deep home run over the right center field wall to cut the lead to one run, 4-3, after four innings. In the fifth, the Bulls again came charging back. Flaherty knocked in the first run of the inning to score Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and tie the game at 4-4. After a walk loaded the bases, Mruczek scored on a wild pitch by Dukes pitcher Scott McMunn to give UB the 5-4 lead. Another walk would load the bases again for Rick Mariano (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) who would score DiCesare with a sacrifice fly and give the Bulls a 6-4 lead. Duquesne tried to rally back with one run in the sixth, a solo home run by Bernie Weber, but could get no closer, falling by the 6-5 final. The win went to Mark Esposito (Fairport, NY/Fairport) who pitched an outstanding game in relief. Esposito went 4.0 innings, and gave up just one hit and struck out two while picking up his first career win. The Bulls are now 9-22 on the season and will continue their week long
homestand tomorrow. UB will host Canisius in a doubleheader at Dunn Tire Park
with the first game starting at 2 pm. |
