Steve Geltz Named MAC East Pitcher of the Week

Sophomore hurler strikes out nine in five innings of work

BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore reliever Steve Geltz (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) was named MAC East Pitcher of the Week following his two appearances this past week, the conference office announced this morning. The award is the first for Geltz in his career and it is the second time a UB pitcher has won weekly honors.

Geltz got off to a hot start in the week, pitching 2.1 innings of relief against Niagara. Geltz fanned seven batters, accounting for all possible seven outs that Geltz could record. He allowed just one hit and one walk in the inning. Geltz struck again in UB’s 3-1 victory over Western Michigan, picking up his first save of the season. In that contest, Geltz pitched 2.2 innings and struck out two batters, while allowing just two hits and walking none.

For the season, Geltz has a 3.86 ERA and his 10 appearances tie him for the team lead. He has struck out 23 batters in just 21.0 innings and opponents are hitting just .218 against him.

Geltz joins James Flatley (Elma, NY/Iroquois) who won pitcher of the week honors following UB’s season-opening victory against Delaware State. Sophomore Chris Ciesla (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) was also honored that week as the MAC East Player of the Week.

Geltz and the Bulls were supposed to hit the field again tomorrow for a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure, but that game has been postponed. The Bulls will now wait and travel to Athens, Ohio this weekend for a three-game set against Ohio. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:00 pm.
