Baseball Weekly Release

The Week in Review

The Bulls were stunned at LeMoyne in a doubleheader on April 11 as the Dolphins hit walk-off home runs to end both games. UB dropped game one 11-8 as LeMoyne's Scott Edwardsen hit a grandslam in the bottom of the eighth for the decision. The Bulls fell 11-9 in the nightcap as LeMoyne's Eddie Harper ended the contest with a three-run homer.

UB hosted 2000 Mid-American Conference Tournament champion Miami for a four-game series at Dunn Tire Park. The Bulls got complete games from Brendan Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) and John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) in 3-1 and 2-1 losses to open the series. UB also lost the final two contests 17-1 and 9-2, to drop its record to 6-27 and 2-14 in league play.

Sanchez Breaks HR Record

Sophomore Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) belted two home runs in UB's doubleheader at LeMoyne on April 11. The homer in game one, a fifth-inning two-run shot, broke Marty Cerny's 1983-85 career record of 17 round-trippers. The third baseman followed with another two-run homer in the first inning of game two, giving him eight this season and 19 for his career. Sanchez set the single-season home run mark as a freshman in 2000 with 11.

Strong Pitching Performances

The Bulls got strong starting pitching as all four starters in the Miami series went at least into the seventh inning. UB gave the bullpen a rest as Brendan Dunford and John Sullivan spun complete games versus the RedHawks. Dunford struck out a season-best 11, allowing just one walk, but was matched by Miami's Chris Leonard in a 3-1 loss. The 11 strikeouts by Dunford marked the most by a Bulls' pitcher this season. Anthony Puccia (Penfield, NY/Penfield) struck out seven against Duquesne on March 3. Sullivan turned in a seven-inning complete game in the first game of Saturday's twinbill. Sullivan struck out seven, bettering his season-best of six from his last start at Bowling Green on April 8. Sullivan walked just one and allowed two runs on four hits but Miami's Billy Kieninger outdueled Sullivan on the mound in the 2-1 decision.

Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Mark McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Timon/St. Jude) also pitched well in their starts but got little offensive help. McMahon struck out six and Balentine four in their starts.

Power Outage

After clubbing 16 home runs in their previous six games, the Bulls' bats fell silent in the Miami series at Dunn Tire Park. UB did not hit a home run in the four games against the RedHawks and managed just five runs in the series. Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South), Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) and Bryan Sanchez were the only Bulls to pick up RBIs in the series.

Robertson, Puccia Out For Season

UB pitchers Jeff Robertson (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) and Anthony Puccia have been lost for the remainder of the season with arm injuries. Robertson suffered a torn medial cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery in the near future. Puccia will miss the rest of the year with a rotator cuff injury that will also require surgery. Robertson led the team with a 6.07 earned run average with 20 strikeouts prior to his injury. Puccia was 1-1 in four starts with 14 punchouts. Both pitchers are expected to apply for medical redshirt waivers.

Home Sweet Home?

The Bulls play "home" games in four different ballparks this season. UB plays host at Dunn Tire Park in downtown Buffalo. They also have home contests slated for Dwyer Stadium in Batavia and Amherst's Audubon Park. UB also hosted Canisius at Canisius' Demske Complex earlier this season after the original contest was moved from Dunn Tire Park.

The Week Ahead

The Bulls will play at Niagara on Wednesday for a 4:00 pm contest. UB will also host Ohio for a four-game MAC series this weekend at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, home of the New York-Penn League Batavia Muckdogs. Game times for the weekend series are 3:00 pm Friday and 1:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is a doubleheader. Game one will be seven innings and game two is slated for nine innings.
