Bulls Drop Series Finale to RedHawks, 9-2BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo and Miami University completed their four-game Mid-American Conference East Division series Sunday afternoon at Dunn Tire Park with the RedHawks taking a 9-2 decision from the Bulls. The win gave Miami the four-game sweep of the homestanding Bulls. Like the first three games of the series, Sunday's clash started as a pitcher's duel between UB's Mark McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Timon/St. Jude) and Miami's Michael Gardner. After four scoreless innings to begin the contest, Miami designated hitter Michael Carlin homered to center giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. UB came back for two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, singles by Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) coupled with Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) being hit by a Gardner pitch loaded the bases. Gardner was then pulled in favor of left-hander Russ Bayer. UB tied the game, 1-1, when Bayer uncorked a wild pitch allowing Daniels to score and Sova and DiCesare to advance. Bayer then hit Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) to reload the bases. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) drew a walk scoring Sova from third and giving the Bulls a 2-1 lead. Bayer was then lifted for Shawn Landis who coaxed Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) to hit into a 5-3 double play and end the inning. The Bulls hit into four twin killings in the contest. Miami then tied the score in the sixth as Brady Nori scored on a Jeremy Ison sacrifice fly. The RedHawks then took the lead for good in the seventh as Carlin struck out but reached first on McMahon's wild pitch third strike. Carlin then moved to third on a single and a walk and scored on Jason Knoedler's bases loaded sacrifice fly giving Miami the 3-2 edge. The RedHawks padded their lead with three runs each in the eighth and ninth innings. Miami scored four runs on sacrifice flies. Landis held the Bulls to just one hit in the final 4.2 innings to pick up the win. McMahon pitched into the eighth, striking out six allowing four runs. Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was the lone Bull to pick up multiple hits. Brown was 2-of-4 on the afternoon. Five other Bulls each had one hit apiece. Nori led Miami with three hits. UB drops to 6-27 overall and 2-14 in the Mid-American Conference. Miami improved to 19-17 and 6-6 in league play. The Bulls travel to Niagara for a single contest Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. UB hosts MAC
East Division foe Ohio at Batavia's Dwyer Stadium for a four-game series starting on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
