Bulls Drop DoubleheaderROCHESTER, NY - The University at Buffalo dropped two games in a baseball doubleheader at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY. The Bulls fell to Albany, losing the first game 7-5 and losing the second 9-8 in extra innings. In the first game, Albany jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Great Danes got two, two-run home runs of UB starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), who suffered his first loss of the season. Albany added two more runs in the second inning on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to give the Danes a 6-0 lead after two. UB finally got on the board in the sixth inning, scoring five runs in bottom half of the inning. Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) knocked in one run with an RBI single and Mark Vogel (West Seneca, NY/Bishop Timon) drew a bases loaded walk. The big hit of the inning was a two-run single by Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) which got UB within one run. Albany would score an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 7-5 win. UB got off to the quick start in the second game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Mike Flaherty (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) had an RBI single and Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) had an RBI triple that missed clearing the centerfield wall by a foot. Albany would add two runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Chris Robilotti to cut the UB lead to one. The Bulls would answer with four runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead. Sanchez provided the scoring punch again with a two-run double and would later score on a base hit by Daniels. Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) then hit an apparent home run off the left field foul pole, but the home plate umpire ruled the ball was not a home run and was still in play. Daniels came around to score but Nesteruk was left stranded at second. Albany fought back slowly, adding two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to make it a 7-6 game going into the final scheduled inning. In the top of the seventh, Albany got a sacrifice fly to tie the game and appeared to be heading for extra innings. UB would start a rally in the bottom of the seventh, getting bases loaded with no outs. After a pop up, Daniels hit a ground ball between shortstop and third that was fielded and thrown to second for a force out. The field umpire ruled that UB's Brandon DiCeasre (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) had interfered with the second baseman on the double play attempt, forcing Daniels out as well with no run scored and sending the game to extra innings. In the eighth, Albany got two runs in the top half of the inning on a UB throwing error for a 9-7 lead. The Bulls would not give up and in the bottom of the eighth started another rally. Scott Mruczek (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) hit a hard shot by the third baseman to score one run and cut the deficit to just one, but Albany got the last out and the 9-8 win. The Bulls are now 8-21 on the season and will look to open up with their
first home game in Buffalo when they host Duquesne for a doubleheader at 1pm
on Tuesday, April 18, at Dunn Tire Park. |
