Strong Pitching Gives Miami Sweep of BullsBUFFALO, NY - Miami University swept a doubleheader from the University at Buffalo Saturday afternoon at Dunn Tire Park, 2-1 and 16-1 in Mid-American Conference action. UB dropped to 6-26 overall, 2-13 in the MAC, while the RedHawks improved to 18-17, 5-6. Game one was a pitcher's duel as UB's John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) and Miami's Billy Kieninger each hurled complete games in the seven-inning opener. Sullivan struck out a season-best seven and walked just one while Kieniger also struck out seven. Both pitchers are now 2-4. Miami opened the scoring in the third inning as Jason Knoedler singled home Michael Carlin to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Miami tacked on a second run when Tom Yost opened the fifth with a walk and scored two batters later on Andi Scheidt's single to left. UB picked up a run in the sixth as Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) moved Daniels to third on a single to left and Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) drove Daniels home on a sacrifice fly. The Bulls had an opportunity in the seventh but stranded the tying run to end the game. In game two, Miami took a 2-0 lead in the second on Carlin's two-run homer to left off UB starter Tyler Balentine (Mendon, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima). Miami added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Zach Schmidt. UB cut the margin in the bottom of the fourth as Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) opened with a double. Huber then scored from second when Schmidt's throw to first on Bryan Sanchez's (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) routine grounder sailed wide of first. Sanchez advanced to second on the play. After Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) moved Sanchez to third on a ground out, Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) hit a fly to left. Sanchez was then thrown out at the plate trying to score what would have been the tying run. Miami extended its lead with 14 runs in the final three innings. Carlin and Luke Reinhart each drove in five runs while Reinhart also scored five times. Judd Richardson picked up the win for Miami, striking out nine in eight innings of work. Huber led the Bulls with a 3-for-5 day in the doubleheader. Sova went 3-of-7 from his leadoff position, picking up two of the Bulls' three hits off Kieninger in the opener. The teams complete the series on Sunday with a nine-inning contest starting at 1:00 p.m. |
