Baseball Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Bulls Sweep Big Four Rival Niagara in Doubleheader The Bulls swept Big Four rival Niagara University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at the Amherst Audubon Field. In the opener, the Bulls exploded for 13 runs in the third inning to propel them to a 21-11 victory. In the nightcap, the Bulls followed with a dramatic 13-11 come-from behind victory by scoring five runs in the sixth.
In the nightcap, Bobby Pizzuto broke an 11-11 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI double to give the Bulls the win. Chris Ciesla tied the contest at 11-11 with a three-run homer. Rob Lawler and Jacob Rosenbeck also knocked in a pair of runs. Zach Anderson closed out the Bulls' victory in 1.1 innings of work, striking out three Purple Eagles. Folli to Start Opening Day with Springfield Cardinals Former UB standout Mike Folli, drafted in the 42nd round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft, will start the 2009 baseball season on the opening day roster of the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League, the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
UB opened a Mid-American Conference weekend series versus Western Michigan with a 9-6 victory on Friday at Amherst Audubon Field. A five-run third inning was the spark that gave the Bulls the win. Agustin and Lawler both went 3-for-4 while Eric Flynn went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Jesse Reinstein captured his first win of the season in 5.1 innings of work. Anderson picked up his second save of the season, holding the Broncos scoreless in 1.1 innings of relief work. Bulls on Four-Game Win Streak with Victory over WMU On Saturday, the Bulls extended their win streak to four, tying the longest string since UB resumed the program in 2000 with a 12-3 win over the Broncos. Pierre Miville-Deschenes, Anderson and Kevin Crumb held the Broncos' offense to four hits on the afternoon with Miville-Deschenes (4-2) collecting his fourth win of the season with five strikeouts. Ciesla was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Four Bulls, Adam Skonieczki, Agustin, Karstedt and Lawler added a pair of hits each.
The Bulls were denied of the their first MAC sweep since 2005 with Sundayâs 14-13 loss to the Broncos. UB jumped out to 9-3 lead after two innings behind second inning triples by Skonieczki (three RBIs) and Lawler (two RBIs) but WMU tied the game in the fifth and took the lead in the seventh before UB rallied to come within a run after eight innings but were unable to complete the comeback. Skonieczki and Karstedt both went 3-for-5 while Skonieczki and Ciesla drove home three runs. On Deck: Homestand with Canisius and Le Moyne The Bulls will finish their two-week homestand this week with back-to-back non-conference matchups. On Tuesday, April 14, the Bulls will face Big Four rival Canisius with the first pitch set for 3:00 pm. The Canisius-Buffalo game is televised and will air on TWCS-Buffalo Channel 13 in the Western New York area on Wednesday, April 15 at 7:00 pm and Friday, April 17 at 3:00 pm. The Bulls will return the next day on Wednesday, April 15 when they face Le Moyne College with the first pitch set for 4:00 pm.
