Buffalo Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Marshall
BUFFALO, NY Buffalo (8-19, 3-7) took both games of a doubleheader against Marshall (13-19, 4-8), in thrilling fashion, on Sunday afternoon at Amherst Audubon Field. The Bulls erased a 4-0 deficit to win game one, 8-4 and scored a run in the bottom of the tenth inning in game two to top the Thundering Herd, 3-2. In the opening game, two UB errors in the fifth inning contributed to Marshall scoring four runs and taking a 4-0 lead. However, the Buffalo bats awoke in the bottom of the fifth as the Bulls scored three runs to cut the Marshall lead to 4-3. With the bases loaded and one out, Brian Zelasko's (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) ground out to the shortstop scored Kevin Nesteruk (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) for the Bulls' first run. Joe Mihalics (Tonawanda, NY/Timon/St. Jude) followed with a clutch two-run single to cut the lead to 4-3. UB exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Buffalo scored the tying run compliments of an RBI single by John Boom (London, Ontario/Catholic Central). Adrian Daniels (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) laced a two-run double down the right field line to give the Bulls a 6-4 lead. Zelasko followed with a seeing-eye single that found its way through a drawn-in infield and allowed two more runs to cross the plate and gave the Bulls an 8-4 lead. Nick Bellacose (Clarence, NY/Clarence) pitched six innings and didn't allow an earned run to improve to 2-2 on the season. Andrew Davis was credited with the loss for Marshall. In game two, Marshall jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground out by Francois Larmore. Buffalo answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) and Brandon DiCesare (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) scored on a throwing error by Marshall shortstop Mike Koitsopoulos.
The game remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh inning when a double by Herd third baseman Corie O'Bryan scored Josh McConnell to tie the contest. However, the day belonged to the Bulls as Boom came up in the bottom of the tenth inning and ripped a single to left field that scored DiCesare for the game winner. Chris McGraw (Summerville,
SC/Stratford) earned the win in relief after he tossed three innings
of shutout ball. John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St.
Jude) got the start and pitched a solid seven innings
before giving way to McGraw. The senior co-captain allowed two earned runs on nine hits and struck out five.
Grant Harper went the distance for Marshall and was credited with the loss. |
