Bulls Drop 3-1 Decision To RedHawks

Dunford fans 11 in complete game

BUFFALO, NY - In a contest that lasted under two hours, the University at Buffalo fell to Miami University 3-1 in Mid-American Conference baseball action at Dunn Tire Park. With the loss, the Bulls fall to 6-24 overall and 2-11 in league play. The RedHawks, last season's MAC Tournament champions, improve to 16-17 and 3-6.

Both starting pitchers were in control throughout the contest. UB starter Brendan Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) went the distance, striking out a season-high 11 RedHawks and walking just one. Dunford (0-4) nearly doubled his season strikeout total on Friday. Dunford had previously struck out 13 in his four starts. Miami's Chris Leonard (7-1) was equally masterful on the mound, allowing just an unearned run and striking out six in the five-hit complete game victory.

The RedHawks got the scoring started in the second inning when Jeremy Ison doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tom Yost's single. Miami added a run in the third as Andi Scheidt tripled to open the inning and scored on a fielder's choice by Brady Nori. The RedHawks then took a 3-0 lead as Ison led off the fourth inning with a solo homer down the left field line.

Buffalo picked up its lone run in the fourth but a fine Miami defensive play prevented any further runs. Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) led off with a single and reached second when Ison threw wide of second on Joe Todoro's (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) grounder to short. With two runners on, Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) drilled a double to right center scoring Blair easily. Todoro was thrown at the plate on a strong relay by second baseman Zach Schmidt. Leonard then was able to strike out the next two Bulls hitters to complete the inning.

Ison had three hits in four at bats for the RedHawks and scored two runs.

The two teams continue their series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Dunn Tire Park. Saturday's opener will be a seven-inning contest with the nightcap slated for nine innings. First pitch is 1:00 p.m.
