Bulls Stunned By LeMoyne On Game-Ending Homers

UB's Sanchez sets career home run mark

SYRACUSE, NY - The University at Buffalo baseball team was stunned by a pair of game-ending home runs falling 11-8 in eight innings and 11-9 at LeMoyne Wednesday afternoon. In all, 13 home runs were hit by the two teams in the doubleheader with UB clubbing seven and the Dolphins six. The losses drop the Bulls to 6-23 overall.

UB rallied from a 7-3 deficit, scoring three runs in the fifth inning of the opener. Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored on Brandon DiCesare's (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) RBI single. Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) followed with a two-run homer to close the gap to 7-6. The round-tripper was Sanchez's seventh of the season and eclipsed Marty Cerny's 1984-86 career home run record of 17.

The Bulls tied the contest, 7-7, in the sixth inning when Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) homered to force extra innings. UB got the go-ahead run in the eighth as Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) led off the inning with a single. Blair later scored on Kevin Brown's (Amherst, NY/Amherst) second RBI of the game to give the Bulls an 8-7 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth, LeMoyne loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Scott Edwardsen ended the first game with a grandslam homer off losing pitcher Mark McMahon (West Seneca, NY/Timon/St. Jude) to give the Dolphins the 11-8 victory.

The Bulls jumped on LeMoyne starter Alan Drechsler early with five runs in the first inning of game two. Sova reached on an error, stole second and scored the game's first run on an RBI double by DiCesare. Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) followed with a run-scoring single and Sanchez cracked his second homer of the day and eighth of the season, a two-run shot, to give the Bulls a 4-0 edge before the first out was recorded. Golemba later hit his second homer of the day in the inning as UB took a 5-0 lead. Golemba now has four homers for the season, all in the past week.

LeMoyne tied the game with five runs of its own in the third off UB starter Mike Leslie (Suffern, NY/Suffern). Mike Volkmar plated the tying runs with a three-run double.

After the Dolphins took a 7-5 lead in the fourth, UB rallied to grab an 8-7 lead when Scott Gruver (Vestal, NY/Vestal) hit a three-run homer to right. Volkmar tied the contest in the bottom of the inning, 8-8, with a leadoff homer and Sova put the Bulls back in front, 9-8, with a homer in the sixth.

LeMoyne again stole the victory in its final at bat as Volkmar doubled off Pete Selden (Holley, NY/Holley) to lead off the seventh. After a walk to Sam Parkins, Eddie Harper ended the contest with a three-run homer for the 11-9 decision. It was the fourth time this season the Bulls have lost a game on their opponent's final at bat, with three of those games decided on home runs.

The Bulls return to the Mid-American Conference wars this weekend hosting Miami for a four-game series at Dunn Tire Park. Friday's game is a 3:00 pm start with a seven- and nine-inning doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 pm and a single game Easter Sunday slated for 1:00 pm.
