Bulls Capture Weekend Opener over Western Michigan

Five-run third inning opens Bulls' scoring

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team opened its Mid-American Conference weekend series versus Western Michigan with a 9-6 victory on Friday at the Amherst Audubon Field. The Bulls' scoring was opened with a five-run third inning eventually propelling the Bulls to their second conference victory.

Facing a one-run deficit in the bottom of the third inning, the Bulls erupted for five runs to take a 5-1 lead. Shivam Bhan stole third only to advance home off an error by the Broncos' catcher to tie the game at 1-1. The Bulls took the lead off an RBI-single by Brad Agustin. Jacob Rosenbeck closed the Bulls scoring with a two-RBI double to deep-left field to push the Bulls to a 5-1 lead.

The Bulls continued to build on their lead in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, scoring single runs to take a a 7-2 lead. In the fourth, Adam Skonieczki cranked a high sacrifice fly to center, scoring Devin Greeno. The Bulls added an addtional run off an individual scoring effort by Rob Lawler, who stole home to put the Bulls ahead 7-2.

The Broncos managed to pull within two with a four-run eighth inning led by a three-RBI triple by Tim Cross, 8-6.

The Bulls sealed the win with a run in the bottom of the eighth off a sarcifice fly by Agustin to right field, scoring Eric Flynn.

Jesse Reinstein (1-2) captured his first win of the season in 5.1 innings of work. Zach Anderson picked up his second save of the season, holding the Broncos scoreless in 1.1 innings of relief work.

Lawler and Agustin went 3-for-4 while Rosenbeck went 2-for-4. Rosenbeck and Agustin tied for a team-high two RBIs and Lawler added an RBI to the Bulls' totals.

The Bulls (13-17, 2-7 MAC) will play the second game of its weekend series against the Broncos on Saturday, April 11 with the first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
