Bulls, Falcons combine for 11 roundtrippers in 24-13 UB loss

BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - With a steady wind blowing out to center field Sunday afternoon, the University at Buffalo and Bowling Green combined for 11 home runs and 37 runs in a wild 24-13 contest in Mid-American Conference play at Steller Field.

The game was preceeded by the completion of Saturday's suspended contest with Bowling Green scoring a 14-1 win.

After Bowling Green's Kelly Hunt gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the first on his first of two homers on the afternoon, UB took a 3-2 lead in the second as Rob Golemba (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) connected for a three-run shot for his second homer in as many days.

Bowling Green tied the contest at 3-3 when Len Elias hit a solo homer. Elias would finish the day 5-of-5 at the plate and tie Bowling Green's school record with eight RBIs.

The Bulls added three more runs in the third inning as Corey Blair (Oneida, NY/Oneida) hit a three-run homer scoring Eric Huber (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Bryan Sanchez (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy).

Bowling Green took an 8-6 lead in the third as Elias hit a grand slam and Chad Curlis doubled scoring Andy Hudak.

UB tied the contest, 8-8, in the fourth as Tim Sova (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) and Huber both hit solo homers to right. Sova led the Bulls with a perfect 4-of-4 day at the plate, scoring two runs and knocking in four.

The Bulls extended their lead with four in fifth and an additional run in the sixth. Sova brought home Joe Todoro (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Golemba with a bases-loaded double. Sanchez later knocked home Sova with an RBI single. In the sixth, Sova brought home Kevin Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst) with an RBI single giving the Bulls a 13-8 lead.

Bowling Green went on to score 16 unanswered runs in the final three innings to take the game. The Falcons tied the contest at 13-13 in the sixth as Tim Newell hit a solo homer and Corey Loomis added a two-run shot. Elias scored the tying run as Andy Hudak hit an RBI single. UB starting pitcher John Sullivan (Buffalo, NY/Timon/St. Jude) earned a no decision throwing a season-high six strikeouts.

The Falcons added six runs in the seventh against losing pitcher Nick Bellacose (Clarence, NY/Clarence). Newell broke the tie, scoring on a sacrifice fly by David Barkholz. Elias then increased the lead when Elias cleared the bases with a three-run triple.

Bowling Green tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the eight including a three-run homer by Hunt and a pinch-homer by Nate Henschen.

With the loss the Bulls fall to 6-21 overall and 2-10 in MAC play. Bowling Green is now 19-8 and 9-2 in the league.
